Influence of Sm/Bi substitution on synthesis, structural, and photon interaction properties of TeO-MoO3-BaO-Sm2O3-Bi2O3 glass system

Jamila S. Alzahrani et al.

Summary: Five transparent and non-toxic glasses with varying Bi2O3 content were synthesized and characterized for their physical, optical, structural and gamma radiation attenuation attributes. The results showed that the glass density, direct optical bandgap, and gamma ray absorption improved with increasing Bi2O3 content. TMBS-5Bi was found to be the best photon absorber, while TMBS-0Bi was the weakest. TMBS-5Bi offers a good alternative as a transparent and environmentally friendly glass for radiation control applications.

Summary: The modification of the optical characteristics of LiNbO3:Zn and LiNbO3:Mg crystals was investigated under ionizing radiation, which was found to inhibit the photorefractive effect in below-threshold concentration LiNbO3:Zn crystals and increase the optical uniformity in above-threshold concentration LiNbO3:Zn and LiNbO3:Mg crystals. Additionally, it was determined that radiation annealing significantly influenced the photorefraction dynamics in lightly doped LiNbO3:Zn crystals, expanding their potential applications.

Influence of Fe2O3 content on the optical features and radiation shielding efficiency of CaO-Na2O-B2O3 glass system

Khadijah Mohammedsaleh Katubi et al.

Summary: The impact of Fe2O3 content on the optical properties and radiation shielding efficiency of the 10.5CaO+16.5Na2O+(73-x)B2O3+xFe(2)O(3) glass system (x = 0, 5 and 10.5 mol. %) for energies up to 15 MeV is studied. The optical properties of the glasses are investigated by calculating factors such as reflection loss, metallization criterion, optical transmission, and static dielectric constant. FLUKA simulations are used to evaluate and extensively study the radiation shielding efficiency of the glassy systems. It is found that the Fe2O3 content has a significant influence on the optical properties and radiation shielding efficiency of the glass system, indicating its potential use in hospitals and nuclear facilities where shielding applications are required.
