Construction of Ti3C2 MXene based fire resistance nanocoating on flexible polyurethane foam for highly efficient photothermal conversion and solar water desalination

Summary: In this study, a bilayer nanocoating consisting of Ti3C2 MXene and polyethyleneimine-modified silica nanoparticles was constructed on the surface of flexible polyurethane foam using layer-by-layer self-assembly technology. The modified flexible polyurethane composites exhibited excellent flame retardancy, photothermal conversion, and solar water desalination properties.

Summary: In this study, ZIF-8@PDA@Cu nanohybrids were successfully synthesized using polydopamine (PDA) as a functional adjuvant. These nanohybrids exhibited excellent dispersion and strong interfacial interactions with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) substrate. TPU/ZIF-8@PDA@Cu composites demonstrated remarkable thermal stability, flame resistance, and toxic smoke inhibition performance. The metal compounds formed by the thermal degradation of ZIF-8@PDA@Cu nano-hybrids significantly reduced the release of toxic gases through a cyclic redox reaction with carbon monoxide.

Atom-economic synthesis of an oligomeric P/N-containing fire retardant towards fire-retarding and mechanically robust polylactide biocomposites

Summary: A novel phosphorus/nitrogen-based flame retardant (APN) was synthesized using a mild Michael addition polymerization without byproducts. With only 3 wt% of APN, the resulting PLA exhibited excellent fire retardancy, including a UL-94 V-0 rating and a limiting oxygen index of 37.6%. The fire-retardant PLA also showed an 85% increase in toughness compared to pure PLA, while maintaining tensile strength and thermal stability. This study provides an atom-economic strategy for synthesizing highly efficient P/N flame retardants for the creation of fire-resistant PLA with robust mechanical properties.

Summary: In this study, MXene was functionalized with phosphorylated chitosan (PCS) to improve its compatibility with the polymer matrix, resulting in the formation of TPU/PCS-MXene nanocomposite with enhanced mechanical and flame-retardant performance. The introduction of only 3 wt% PCS-MXene significantly reduced heat release rate, total heat release, and total smoke production of the composite, showcasing the potential of bio-based PCS-MXene in developing advanced MXene-polymer composites.
