Enhanced plastic deformation capacity in hexagonal-close-packed medium entropy alloys via facilitating cross slip

Xiaocan Wen et al.

Summary: Alloys with a hexagonal close-packed (HCP) lattice often suffer from intrinsic brittleness due to their insufficient number of slip systems. However, this paper demonstrates that HCP Hf-Zr-Ti medium entropy alloys (MEAs) with a higher content of Hf achieve remarkable tensile ductility. The addition of Hf increases the stacking fault energy and promotes the source of pyramidal dislocations, resulting in increased tensile ductility. These findings not only provide new insights into the deformation of HCP alloys but also offer a basis for developing novel HCP complex alloys with optimized properties.

Dislocation climbing dominated decomposition and fracture of carbides in a Ni-based superalloy

Hualong Ge et al.

Summary: Through transmission electron microscopy and atomistic simulation, we investigated the mechanisms of MC decomposition at the atomistic to micro-scale. We found that MC can deform plastically during high-temperature creep and observed high-density dislocations and steps at matrix/MC interfaces. This release of stress concentration improves the creep resistance. Moreover, we discovered that MC decomposition into M23C6 occurs in grain interiors, leading to cracks at the partially coherent M23C6/MC interfaces, which is different from the existing understanding.

Refractory high-entropy alloys: A focused review of preparation methods and properties

Wei Xiong et al.

Summary: In recent years, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have gained prominence as metallic materials with unique design strategies and excellent mechanical properties. Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) are considered as high-temperature materials with great application prospects and the potential to replace nickel-based superalloys. This review focuses on the research status, preparation methods, microstructure, phase transformation, mechanical properties, and strengthening mechanisms of RHEAs. The properties of RHEAs, including high strength, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance, are also discussed. Despite challenges, this combination of knowledge may shape the future of RHEAs and overcome the trade-off between high strength and high toughness.

Nitride-reinforced HfNbTaTiV high-entropy alloy with excellent room and elevated-temperature mechanical properties

Bingjie Wang et al.

Summary: Nitride-reinforced (HfNbTaTiV)90N10 high-entropy alloy with abundant FCC nitride phases formed in the BCC matrix by arc melting technique exhibits high strength and ductility at both room temperature and elevated temperatures. The semi-coherent interface between alternating BCC and FCC phases enhances the strength and promotes the compatible deformation of the dual-phase structure. The coordination of deformation between the nitride phases and the matrix contributes to the excellent ductility of the alloy.

Alloys for application at ultra-high temperatures: Nb-silicide in situ composites Challenges, breakthroughs and opportunities

P. Tsakiropoulos

Summary: This paper compares Nb-silicide based alloys with refractory-complex-concentrated-alloys (RCCAs) in terms of density, oxidation, and mechanical properties, highlighting the importance of alloying to suppress oxidation and scale spallation, and to meet fracture toughness goals. The discussion also emphasizes the role of microstructure type, Ti/Si, Ti/Hf, Nb/(Ti + Hf) ratios, and alloying additions in creep behavior, and describes the alloying behavior using parameters such as delta, Delta chi, VEC, Delta Hmix, Delta Smix, and omega. The study shows that RCCAs with Nb and other RM additions can be represented together with Nb-silicide based alloys in the same maps of the aforementioned parameters, indicating similarities in their alloying behavior.

A high-entropy alloy with dislocation-precipitate skeleton for ultrastrength and ductility

Yongkun Mu et al.

Summary: In this study, a combination of high-density dislocation structures and high-volume-fraction ductile nano-precipitates was successfully achieved in a high-entropy alloy using a three-dimensional printing technique. The resulting structure, known as the dislocation-precipitate skeleton architecture, demonstrated ultra-high tensile strength and significant ductility, which were attributed to the synergistic strengthening of dislocation-precipitation and the evolution of multiple stacking fault structures.

Solving oxygen embrittlement of refractory high-entropy alloy via grain boundary engineering

Zhengqi Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, large plasticity and high strength were achieved in NbMoTaW RHEAs through grain boundary engineering and the addition of metalloid B or C. The room-temperature brittleness of as-cast NbMoTaW RHEA was found to be caused by grain boundary segregation of oxygen, which was alleviated by the added metalloids, leading to a change in fracture morphology.

Hot deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of non-equimolar Ti2ZrHfV0.5Ta0.2 refractory high-entropy alloy

Tianxin Li et al.

Summary: This work investigates the hot deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of a non-equimolar TiZrHf-rich refractory high-entropy alloy (RHEA). The study reveals a contradiction between the concentration of group IV elements and high-temperature strength. Excessive addition of group IV elements leads to deterioration of high-temperature strength. The dynamic recrystallization mechanism strongly depends on the thermo-mechanical processing conditions, with a dominant role played by edge dislocations. Stress drops are observed under low deformation temperatures and high strain rates.
