Impact toughness of Fe-Mn-Al-C austenitic low-density steel solution treated at different temperatures

Zhiqi Xie et al.

Summary: The impact fracture behavior of a Fe-25Mn-10Al-1.1C austenitic low-density steel was studied under two solution treatment temperatures. The presence of alpha + kappa-carbides at austenite grain boundaries resulted in a significant difference in V-notch impact energy between the samples treated at 800 degrees C (S8 sample) and 1000 degrees C (S10 sample), with values of 16.8 and 67.0 J, respectively. Differences in deformation characteristics, grain boundary precipitation of carbides, and the proportion of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) and twins were identified as the main reasons for the disparity in impact toughness. The relatively low impact energy of the S10 sample compared to other high-Mn steels was also discussed.

Ultrahigh tensile strength achieved in a lightweight medium Mn steel via prominent work hardening

Bin Hu et al.

Summary: We have developed a new type of ultrastrong medium Mn steel with a density reduced to 7.39 g cm-3. This steel has a unique tri-phase microstructure consisting of a hierarchical martensitic matrix, ultra-fine-retained austenite grains, and compressed and {200} oriented 8-ferrite lamellas. The high Al and Si contents in the alloying contribute to the formation of 8-ferrite lamellas and the reduction of density. Through in-situ synchrotron-based high-energy X-ray diffraction examinations, it is revealed that the residual compressive stress in 8-ferrite, dislocation multiplication in all three phases, and the gamma-to-alpha' transformation contribute to the remarkable work hardening increment. This study facilitates the development of novel strategies for fabricating ultrastrong but light steels.

Simultaneously enhancing strength-ductility synergy and strain hardenability via Si-alloying in medium-Al FeMnAlC lightweight steels

Huihui Zhi et al.

Summary: We investigated the microstructures, mechanical responses, and deformation-induced microstructures of medium-Al Fe-21Mn-6Al-1C-xSi (x = 0, 1.5, 3 wt.%) lightweight steels in their solution-treated and aged states. The presence of nano-sized long-range ordered domains and the precipitation of kappa'-carbides were observed. The addition of Si enhanced the strength, ductility, and strain hardenability of the solution-treated steels. Aging time and Si content influenced the yield strength and ductility of the aged steels. The occurrence of dynamic slip band refinement and twinning-induced plasticity effects contributed to the high ductility of the short-time aged 3Si steel.

Extraordinary creep resistance in a non-equiatomic high-entropy alloy from the optimum solid-solution strengthening and stress-assisted precipitation process

Shuying Chen et al.

Summary: Improving creep resistance is often achieved by optimizing alloy design to create strong solid-solution strengthening and/or coherent precipitates for dislocation blockage. High-entropy alloys (HEAs), which are single-phase solid-solutions, exhibit creep properties comparable to precipitate-strengthened ferritic alloys. However, many HEAs develop incoherent second phases during long-term annealing, reducing their lifetime and limiting their use at high temperatures. This study demonstrates the exceptional creep resistance of a non-equiatomic Al0.3CoCrFeNi HEA, which has a much lower creep strain rate compared to the Cantor alloy and its subsets. The research reveals that the suppression of B2 precipitate phase during the early stage of creep deformation and the emergence of metastable and coherent L1(2) precipitates significantly contribute to creep strengthening.

Enhancing the properties of Al-Ni added medium Mn steel by tailoring B2-NiAl precipitates through aging treatment

Biraj Kumar Sahoo et al.

Summary: The effect of aging treatment on the strength-ductility combination of intercritically annealed medium Mn steel was studied. The results showed that both one-stage and two-stage aging treatments significantly improved the strength-ductility product of the steel. One-stage aging resulted in the formation of nano-sized NiAl precipitates, while two-stage aging led to phase-selective precipitation of varying sizes of NiAl. The two-stage aged sample exhibited a combination of TRIP-TWIP effect and precipitation strengthening, leading to sustained three-stage work-hardening during deformation and improved strength-ductility combination.

Strengthening κ-carbide steels using residual dislocation content

T. W. J. Kwok et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of hot rolling temperature on the mechanical properties of a Fe-28Mn-8Al-1.0C steel. It was found that lower temperature rolling significantly increased the yield strength without compromising the elongation to failure. The improvement in strength was attributed to the increase in residual dislocation density, which was retained even after the ageing heat treatment. The homogeneous precipitation of kappa-carbides indicated that the high residual dislocation density did not adversely affect precipitation kinetics.

Ordering effects on deformation substructures and strain hardening behavior of a CrCoNi based medium entropy alloy

Jiashi Miao et al.

Summary: A CrCoNi based medium entropy alloy with small additions of Ti, Al and Nb (denoted as (CrCoNi)(93)Al4Ti2Nb) exhibits comparable tensile properties to equiatomic CrCoNi alloy. Spatially-localized long range ordering (LRO) L1(2) domains are found in this alloy, where deformation occurs by the slip of a/2 <110> dislocations and leading dislocations glide as pairs in slip bands due to the existence of LRO domains. Multipoles are formed through dislocation slip with opposite signs on adjacent {111} slip planes, serving as building blocks for subgrain structures consisting of fine slip bands.

Crystallographic texture evolution and martensite transformation in the strain hardening process of a ferrite-based low density steel

Mingxiang Liu et al.

Summary: The strain-induced martensite transformation plays a crucial role in the strain hardening process of low-density steel. This transformation is affected by the texture evolution and grain size of austenite, influencing the rate of martensite transformation in each stage of strain hardening. The presence of TWIP effect and high density dislocations during martensite transformation contributes to continuous hardening, but the final stage is slowed down by unfavorable orientation and reduced grain size of austenite.

Evolution of microstructure and deformation behavior in Al-Ni added medium-Mn steel processed through intercritical/cold rolling and annealing

Biraj Kumar Sahoo et al.

Summary: The effect of intercritical annealing on medium-Mn steel processed through different routes showed distinct variations in grain structure, mechanical properties, and deformation behavior after annealing. Higher fraction of retained austenite was found in CR-annealed samples compared to IR-annealed samples due to extensive recrystallization. IR-annealed samples exhibited higher yield strength and ultimate tensile strength, while CR sample annealed at 800 degrees C showed a high elongation of 57% with a strength-ductility combination of 47.7 GPa%.

Revisiting the formation mechanism of intragranular κ-carbide in austenite of a Fe-Mn-Al-Cr-C low-density steel

Jianlei Zhang et al.

Summary: The formation of intragranular kappa-carbide in gamma-austenite is found to occur directly in the disordered state, rather than through spinodal decomposition-ordering mechanism. This is due to the similar lattice structure, same composition, and complete coherency between the gamma-austenite matrix and kappa-carbides.
