Micro/nano multiscale reinforcing strategies toward extreme high-temperature applications: Take carbon/carbon composites and their coatings as the examples

Qiangang Fu et al.

Summary: Carbon fiber reinforced carbon composites (C/Cs) are promising high-temperature materials, but they are prone to destructive oxidation at elevated temperatures. Matrix modification and coating technologies are not sufficient due to brittleness of ceramics and other inherent issues. Micro/nano multiscale reinforcing strategies have been developed in the past two decades to fabricate C/Cs with high strength and excellent high-temperature stability.

Ablation behavior of single and alternate multilayered ZrC-SiC coatings under oxyacetylene torch

Guanghui Feng et al.

Summary: The investigation focused on the ablation behavior and thermal stress of monolayered ZrC-SiC coatings with different SiC amounts. An alternate coating with 4 sublayers containing 10 and 70 vol.% SiC was applied on SiC-coated C/C composites. Ablation tests under oxyacetylene torch showed that the alternate coating provided superior ablation properties by enduring mechanical denudation and hindering oxygen transport inward during ablation.

An optimized strategy toward multilayer ablation coating for SiC-coated carbon/carbon composites based on experiment and simulation

Guanghui Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, a multilayer coating with different sublayer thicknesses was fabricated on SiC-coated C/C composites using plasma spraying. The relationship between sublayer thickness and thermal stress was investigated through finite element analysis and practical experiments, showing a close connection among sublayer thickness, residual stress, and ablation behavior.

Summary: The plasma-sprayed La2O3-modified HfC-SiC (HSL) coating exhibits superior ablation resistance and elastic modulus on SiC-coated carbon/carbon composites, primarily attributed to its unique structure and composition.

Design and characterization of zirconium-based multilayer coating for carbon/carbon composites against oxyacetylene ablation

Guanghui Feng et al.

Summary: The study showed that the multilayer coating exhibited better ablation resistance in high-temperature environments, effectively preventing oxidation and deterioration. The monotonically decreased thermal expansion and multiple roles played by the coating are the main reasons for its superior performance.

Ablation resistance of HfC-TaC/HfC-SiC alternate coating for SiC-coated carbon/carbon composites under cyclic ablation

Guanghui Feng et al.

Summary: Alternate coatings of HfC-TaC/HfC-SiC with different sublayer thicknesses were fabricated on SiC-coated carbon/carbon composites, showing the best ablation performance due to the dense oxide layer and stress release from dendritic cracks. Additionally, exfoliation at the interface of adjacent sublayers in some coatings led to violent evaporation of exposed sublayers.

Effects of PyC shell thickness on the microstructure, ablation resistance of SiCnws/PyC-C/C-ZrC-SiC composites

Qinchuan He et al.

Summary: By increasing the PyC shell thickness in SiC nanowires/pyrocarbon core-shell structured composites, the density and thermal conductivity of the composites can be improved while reducing the coefficient of thermal expansion, ultimately enhancing the anti-ablation properties. However, there is an optimal PyC thickness where further increases can lead to an increase in ablation rates.

Stress field and damage evolution in C/SiC woven composites: Image-based finite element analysis and in situ X-ray computed tomography tests

Shigang Ai et al.

Summary: This study constructed and examined meso-structural finite element models of CVI C/SiC composite based on X-ray microtomography digital images. Using the IB-FEM method, the damage evolution and fracture behaviors of the composite were investigated, with in situ tensile testing conducted to verify the model. The results showed that material damage initiated at defects and propagated towards interfaces, eventually forming macrocracks, consistent with in situ CT experiment results.
