Summary: The introduction of boron dopants and defects into metal-free graphitic carbon nitride significantly enhanced its activity towards PMS activation, leading to the generation of singlet oxygen as the dominant reactive oxygen species. The engineered electronic structure altered the electron-hole distribution, weakened catalyst resistance to charge transfer, and facilitated electron transfer between the catalyst and PMS, ultimately improving photocatalytic performance. The strengthened and enlarged positive electrostatic potential areas on the heptazine rings oriented the electron transfer process, contributing to the generation of singlet oxygen and providing insights into the mechanism behind the catalytic performance enhancement in persulfate-based photocatalytic water treatment.
