Factors affecting the burn rate and combustion temperature of fire-extinguishing aerosol-forming composite material

Meenakshi Rohilla et al.

Summary: Aerosol-forming composites (AFCs) have potential as alternatives to Halon for fire-extinguishing applications. The burn rate and combustion temperature of AFCs greatly impact their performance. This study extensively investigated the effects of processing and environmental parameters on burn rate and combustion temperature of AFCs prepared with KNO3 and phenol formaldehyde resin with varying n-CuO content (1-15%). Increasing curing temperature, curing duration, and n-CuO content increased burn rate and decreased combustion temperature. Increasing loading pressure, humidity, and particle size decreased burn rate. The developed high burn rate AFCs show promise for use with condensed aerosol-based fire-extinguishing systems for fast fire suppression.

Facile synthesis of rGO/Fe2O3 nanocomposite and its combination with aerosol forming composite for ultra-fast fire extinguishment

Meenakshi Rohilla et al.

Summary: rGO/Fe2O3 nanocomposites were synthesized via a facile and inexpensive hydrothermal route and incorporated into aerosol forming composites (AFCs) for ultra-fast fire extinguishing applications. The nanocomposites were characterized using various techniques, and the AFCs were evaluated for their burn rate, combustion efficiency, fire extinguishing concentration, time, temperature, and activation energy. The results showed successful synthesis of rGO/Fe2O3 nanocomposites, with Fe2O3 nanoparticles distributed over and in-between graphene oxide nanosheets. Addition of 3% rGO/5.0Fe(2)O(3) nanocomposite to AFCs resulted in improved combustion efficiency, burn rate, and faster fire extinguishing. AFCs were found promising for future quick fire extinguishment requirements.

Preparation and characterization of MgAl-CuO ternary nanothermite system by arrested reactive milling and its effect on the thermocatalytic decomposition of cellulose nitrate

Slimane Bekhouche et al.

Summary: Nanothermites are widely used in explosive and propellant formulations due to their high energy release efficiency and fast reaction rate. This study successfully prepared MgAl-CuO ternary nanothermite and characterized it using different analytical techniques. Composite films based on cellulose nitrate were also prepared and fully characterized. The results showed that adding 5% MgAl-CuO resulted in the best energetic performance for the composites.

Role of metal oxides on the performance of aerosol forming composites for fire extinguishing application

Meenakshi Rohilla et al.

Summary: The study indicates that adding 3% CuO can significantly increase the burn rate of AFC and decrease MEC. Activation energies of decomposition for base AFC and AFC-CuO were calculated using model-free methods. The most probable thermal decomposition mechanisms were found to be F-1/3 and R-3, F-2/3 for base AFC and CuO-AFC, respectively.
