Improved mechanical properties and strengthening mechanism with the altered precipitate orientation in magnesium alloys

Y. J. Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of aging prior to twinning deformation on the precipitate orientation in AZ31 Mg alloy. The results demonstrated that the presence of prismatic plates led to significant improvements in compressive yield strength and compression ratio. Analysis using a yield strengthen model revealed that the enhanced CYS was primarily attributed to the altered precipitate orientation and refined grain size, with prismatic plates exhibiting a stronger hardening effect on basal slip.

The effect of ultrasonic surface rolling process on tension-tension fatigue limit of small diameter specimens of Inconel 718 superalloy

Xiang Peng et al.

Summary: The fatigue limit of aged Inconel 718 superalloy specimens after ultrasonic surface rolling process (USRP) is influenced by the diameter. Smaller diameter samples showed a decrease in fatigue limit, while larger diameter samples exhibited an increase. Moreover, the fatigue life displayed an increasing trend and then a decreasing trend with increasing distance between the fatigue crack initiation position (FCIP) and the specimen surface.

Effects of deformation twins on microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and corrosion behaviors in magnesium alloys-A review

Lianhui Li et al.

Summary: Twins play a crucial role in regulating texture, refining grains, improving mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance in magnesium alloys. This article reviews the common types and variants of twins in magnesium alloys, their influencing factors, and their effects on microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. It also proposes interesting ideas for further research.

Achieving higher dynamic mechanical response by adjusting texture through twinning in a ZK61 Mg alloy

Abdul Malik et al.

Summary: In this study, the reorientation of texture and improvement of mechanical properties in ZK61-T6 and ZK61-PC magnesium alloys were achieved through cross pre-compression. The results showed that the compressive yield strength, ultimate compressive strength, and elongation to fracture were significantly increased. The microstructure evolution revealed the propensity and width of adiabatic shear band and the role of twinning, de-twinning, and dislocation in absorbing high-stress energy. The twinning-induced rotational dynamic recrystallization mechanism contributed to the development of fine grains. Based on the findings, pre-compression is recommended as a practical approach to enhance the efficiency of ZK61 magnesium alloy.

Post deformation analysis of the ballistic impacted magnesium alloys, a short-review

Abdul Malik et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys are lightweight materials that have gained increasing attention in military and aerospace fields, but their applications are limited by low ductility and mechanical properties. Components made from magnesium alloys must withstand shockwaves under hypervelocity ballistic impact, and ballistic testing can provide valuable data for performance evaluation and optimization.

Effect of grain size on the microstructure and deformation mechanism of Mg-2Y-0.6Nd-0.6Zr alloy at a high strain rate

Aiwen Li et al.

Summary: The dynamic mechanical behavior and deformation mechanism of Mg-2Y-0.6Nd-0.6Zr alloys are influenced by grain size, with fine grains inhibiting twinning and allowing easier movement of dislocations. Increasing grain size leads to a shift in the main deformation mechanism from dislocation slip to {101(-)2} tensile twins and dislocation slip.

Evading strength-corrosion tradeoff in Mg alloys via dense ultrafine twins

Changjian Yan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ultrafine grained Mg alloys with dense twins exhibit high strength and reduced corrosion rate compared to conventional ultrafine grains, achieved through a carefully designed multi-directional compression treatment refining grain size down to 300nm. This technique not only decreases micro-galvanic corrosion tendency, but also completely suppresses severe localized corrosion.

Effect of Ce-base mischmetal addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-rolled ZK60 alloy

E. P. Silva et al.

Summary: Mg-Zn-Zr (ZK) alloys have high mechanical strength, but are susceptible to hot cracking due to the formation of low melting point precipitates. Adding rare earths can improve the alloy's performance. Ce-base mischmetal addition can enhance hot rolling behavior, refine grain size, and improve mechanical properties of ZK60 alloy.
