Review of computational approaches to predict the thermodynamic stability of inorganic solids

Christopher J. Bartel

Summary: This review discusses the fundamentals of calculating thermodynamic stability using first-principles methods. It covers stability with respect to decomposition into competing phases and stability with respect to phase transition into alternative structures at fixed composition. The state-of-the-art and practical considerations for each topic are summarized. The application of machine learning to stability predictions is also addressed. Finally, the limitations of thermodynamic stability predictions in predicting materials synthesizability are discussed.

Reaction Selectivity in Cometathesis: Yttrium Manganese Oxides

Allison Wustrow et al.

Summary: This study highlights the synthesis of metastable materials through low-temperature cometathesis reactions, demonstrating how different precursor combinations can alter reaction pathways and yield different product polymorphs. By examining various combinations of A and A' in the reaction, the importance of nascent halide salt products in determining reaction onset temperatures and the role of alkali and alkaline earth species in determining accessible intermediates are revealed. The study also shows that phase-selective synthesis can be achieved by using mixtures of alkali or alkaline earth cations. The findings emphasize the control of reaction pathways in targeting metastable materials.

Machine-Learning Rationalization and Prediction of Solid-State Synthesis Conditions

Haoyan Huo et al.

Summary: This study presents a new approach using machine learning to predict solid-state synthesis conditions. By mining large data sets from scientific journal articles, the researchers identified a strong correlation between optimal heating temperatures and precursor stability, indicating the importance of reaction kinetics in determining synthesis conditions. Furthermore, heating times were found to be strongly correlated with experimental procedures and instrument setups, suggesting the presence of human bias in the data set.

Relative Kinetics of Solid-State Reactions: The Role of Architecture in Controlling Reactivity

Gabrielle E. Kamm et al.

Summary: The article discusses the importance of understanding and controlling the phenomena that limit solid-state reactions for material synthesis. The study focuses on a model reaction and explores how altering the packing and interfacial contact between reagent particles affects the reaction kinetics. Analysis shows that there are different kinetic regimes in the reaction process, with the fast kinetic regime dominating the initial stages of the reaction. The article also presents simulation results that support the observed experimental findings.

Bulk Synthesis, Structure, and Electronic Properties of Magnesium Zirconium Nitride Solid Solutions

Christopher L. Rom et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of bulk powders of MgZrN2 and MgxZr2-xN2 (0 < x < 1) through a metathesis route, showing that lower temperature reactions lead to the formation of these ternary phases instead of exclusively ZrN. Thermochemical calculations suggest that controlling the ratio of metathesis precursors can vary the composition of MgxZr2-xN2, resulting in a gradual metal-to-insulator transition with increasing x. Furthermore, optical behavior indicates nanoscale compositional inhomogeneity in the powders, even in Mg-rich samples.

Rational Solid-State Synthesis Routes for Inorganic Materials

Muratahan Aykol et al.

Summary: The rational solid-state synthesis of inorganic compounds involves catalytic nucleation on crystalline reactants, where contributions of reaction and interfacial energies to nucleation barriers are approximated from thermo-chemical data and crystal features. Favorable synthesis reactions are identified by Pareto analysis of relative nucleation barriers and phase selectivities, enabling reaction planning for a range of compounds and discussing pathways for retrosynthesis of inorganics.
