Thermal behavior of Cu-Mg-Al-Ba/Sr bifunctional composites during chemical looping combustion and HCl adsorption of MSW syngas

Guicai Liu et al.

Summary: CuO Oxygen carrier (OC) and Ba/Sr sorbent supported by Mg-Al composites synthesized by mechanical mixing exhibited great reactivity and stability during the three-stage MSW syngas chemical looping combustion and HCl adsorption (CLCA) process. The Ba/Sr sorbent slightly influenced the redox ability of OC but had no impact on MSW syngas combustion, maintaining stability for 20 cycles. Higher H2O content and temperature facilitated sorbent regeneration for better HCl adsorption efficiency, and Ba-loading composite showed superior HCl adsorption performance due to its better regeneration efficiency. The migration of CuO/Cu to the surface enhanced stability in mechanical strength, elemental composition, and redox ability during long-term operation.

Fate of trace elements in Oxygen Carrier Aided Combustion (OCAC) of municipal solid waste

Ivana Stanicic et al.

Summary: Oxygen Carrier Aided Combustion (OCAC) is a novel approach for burning waste in a fluidized bed. This study analyzed solid samples from an industrial OCAC application using municipal solid waste and ilmenite as the oxygen carrier. The presence of oxygen carriers was found to influence the ash chemistry and the distribution of elements throughout the particle cross-section. The results provide valuable insights into the solid-state chemistry and fate of important elements.

Effect of alkali earth metal doping on the CuO/Al2O3 oxygen carrier agglomeration resistance during chemical looping combustion

Guicai Liu et al.

Summary: The influence of alkali earth metals (AEMs) doping on CuO/Al2O3 oxygen carrier in chemical looping combustion (CLC) was investigated. The doping of AEMs enhanced the performance and stability of the oxygen carrier, and deferred the agglomeration. The improved performance was attributed to the enhanced redox kinetics and the migration of AEM species during the synthesis process.

Dechlorination performance in chemical looping conversion of polyvinyl chloride plastic waste using K/Na/Ca-modified iron ore oxygen carriers

Hongming Jiang et al.

Summary: The reducing atmosphere of chemical looping conversion (CL) can greatly reduce the emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) during the heat treatment of polyvinyl chloride plastics waste (PPW). Iron ore OC modified by alkali metals and alkaline earth metals (AAEM) showed good dechlorination and catalytic gasification performances. Decreasing the reaction temperature and increasing the dechlorination agent loading improved the dechlorination efficiency.

Oxygen carrier aided combustion (OCAC) of two waste fuels - Experimental and theoretical study of the interaction between ilmenite and zinc, copper and lead

Ivana Stanicic et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fate of zinc, copper, and lead in waste fuels during combustion utilizing oxygen carrier aided combustion technology. It was found that iron on the surface of the oxygen carrier interacts with copper and zinc to form corresponding compounds, while lead is more likely to end up in the fly ash as PbCl2. Thermodynamic calculations were consistent with the identified compounds.

Experimental Evaluation Using Plastic Waste, Paper Waste, and Coal as Fuel in a Chemical Looping Combustion Batch Reactor

Zainab Temitope Yaqub et al.

Summary: A comparative study of chemical looping combustion (CLC) with paper, plastic, and coal as fuel showed that higher temperature leads to an increase in CO2 yield and carbon conversion for all fuels. Paper had the highest CO to CO2 conversion followed by PVC and coal, attributed to the higher fraction of volatiles in paper. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of the oxygen carrier particle showed slight differences in morphology after experiments with the three different fuels.
