Transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) in COVID-19 patients: relation to platelets and association with the disease outcome

Snezana Zivancevic-Simonovic et al.

Summary: This study aimed to measure the serum concentrations of TGF-beta 1 in severely ill COVID-19 patients and analyze its relationship with hematological and biochemical parameters and disease outcome. The results showed that serum levels of TGF-beta 1 correlated with platelet counts in COVID-19 patients and controls. Additionally, positive correlations were found between TGF-beta 1 and white blood cell and lymphocyte counts, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and fibrinogen level, while negative correlations were observed with platelet distribution width, D-dimer, and activated partial thromboplastin time values. Lower serum values of TGF-beta 1 were associated with unfavorable outcomes of COVID-19.

Elena Sancho Ferrando et al.

Summary: The study found that plasma levels of sTNFR 1 and 2 were higher in critically ill patients with COVID-19, and were associated with disease severity, other inflammatory biomarkers, and acute kidney injury development. sTNFR 1 higher than 2.29 ng/mL and sTNFR 2 higher than 11.7 ng/mL were identified as optimal cut-offs for predicting 30-day survival in the ICU.

COVID-19: Immunohistochemical Analysis of TGF-β Signaling Pathways in Pulmonary Fibrosis

Caroline Busatta Vaz de Paula et al.

Summary: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) followed by lung remodeling is observed in COVID-19, which can lead to pulmonary fibrosis. Therapy with TGF-beta inhibitors may mitigate the development of pulmonary fibrosis and its consequences for post-COVID-19 life quality.

Possible Role of Matrix Metalloproteinases and TGF-β in COVID-19 Severity and Sequelae

Gustavo Ramirez-Martinez et al.

Summary: The costs of COVID-19 are devastating and there is an urgent need for serological biomarkers, antiviral agents, and novel therapies. Previous studies on immunity against other respiratory infections provide reference knowledge to understand the pathogenesis of COVID-19. This review discusses the immune responses and the involvement of matrix metalloproteinases and transforming growth factor-beta in the lungs. Furthermore, it explores the potential implications of these molecules as biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of COVID-19 patients, including those in the convalescent phase.

Peter A. Szabo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the immune responses in the respiratory tract and blood of severe COVID-19 patients, revealing that T cells in the airways showed protective profiles while myeloid cells exhibited hyperinflammatory signatures. These findings provide important insights for understanding and treating COVID-19 lung pathology.

Interleukin-6 Is a Biomarker for the Development of Fatal Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Pneumonia

Andre Santa Cruz et al.

Summary: Hyper-inflammatory responses induced by SARS-CoV-2 are major factors in disease severity and death, with IL-6 levels showing a significant correlation with disease stages and outcomes in COVID-19 patients, particularly in relation to respiratory failure. IL-6 also outperforms CRP as a predictive marker for disease progression.

RGD-binding integrins and TGF-beta in SARS-CoV-2 infections - novel targets to treat COVID-19 patients?

Ingrid Carvacho et al.

Summary: The new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is a global pandemic and a severe public health crisis with high contagion and fatality rates, especially among elderly and patients with underlying medical conditions. Targeting RGD-binding integrins may help inhibit viral cell infection and block TGF-beta activation, potentially affecting the severity of various human pathologies. The correlation between ACE2 and TGF-beta expression and potential consequences for severe COVID-19 infections have also been discussed, along with the use of approved drugs or drugs in clinical trials targeting these mechanisms for COVID-19 treatment.
