High sensitivity troponin and COVID-19 outcomes

Nikolaos Papageorgiou et al.

Summary: Recent reports have shown high troponin levels in patients with COVID-19. This study found that age, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease predicted myocardial injury, and positive peak troponin levels were associated with a higher risk of needing mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, acute kidney injury, venous thromboembolism, atrial fibrillation, and death during admission, suggesting that troponin levels could be used as predictors for outcomes in COVID-19 patients.

Clinical predictors of acute cardiac injury and normalization of troponin after hospital discharge from COVID-19

Summary: This study investigated the incidence of persistent acute cardiac injury (ACI) in COVID-19 survivors and identified clinical predictors of recovery. The results showed that ACI is common among COVID-19 survivors, and readily available patient data can accurately predict ACI recovery.

Serum troponin, D-dimer, and CRP level in severe coronavirus (COVID-19) patients

Ayad M. Ali et al.

Summary: The study investigated the correlation between troponin, CRP, D-dimer, WBC, and PCR-Ct in COVID-19 survivors and deceased patients, as well as in families who lost multiple members to the disease. Significant differences in biomarker levels were found between survivor and deceased groups, with higher levels of troponin, D-dimer, CRP, and WBCs observed in those who died. Family members who lost multiple individuals also showed a correlation between troponin and other biomarkers, indicating a more severe disease progression.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic began in late 2019, spreading rapidly worldwide and resulting in a significant number of cases and deaths. Severe cases may develop acute respiratory distress syndrome, and mechanical ventilation can lead to complications such as pneumothorax.

Summary: Neurologic symptoms caused by COVID-19 can vary in severity, with some being mild while others can be life-threatening. These symptoms often persist after the acute phase of the illness, posing challenges for diagnosis and treatment.

Summary: This study demonstrates an independent association between troponin positivity and increased short-term mortality in COVID-19 patients. It provides important insights into the severity of COVID-19 and its risk factors.

Clinical determinants of the severity of COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Xinyang Li et al.

Summary: The study identified potential risk factors for severe COVID-19 cases, including advanced age, male gender, obesity, smoking history, hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, chronic kidney disease, cerebrovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, malignancy, and chronic liver disease. Acute respiratory distress syndrome, shock, and acute kidney injury were found to be major hindrances to recovery.

Colchicine effectively attenuates inflammatory biomarker high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial

Arash Gholoobi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of colchicine on hs-CRP levels in NSTEMI patients. The results showed that colchicine significantly reduced hs-CRP levels in NSTEMI patients, with a stronger effect compared to placebo. However, neither colchicine nor placebo treatment could achieve hs-CRP levels lower than 2 mg/L.

Effectiveness of COVID-19 diagnosis and management tools: A review

W. Alsharif et al.

Summary: RT-PCR has low sensitivity in diagnosing COVID-19 compared to CT, which shows typical imaging features helpful in rectifying false negative results from RT-PCR. While CT is a powerful tool in COVID-19 diagnosis, its low specificity and challenges in differentiation from other viral pneumonia on CT scans make it insufficient alone. AI may aid radiologists in distinguishing COVID-19 from other pneumonia diseases.
