Avoiding investment in fossil fuel assets

Christopher A. Kennedy et al.

Summary: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions requires transforming capital assets, especially energy supply ones. This paper examines the hypothesis of economically efficient decarbonization by avoiding new investments in fossil fuel assets while their capital assets depreciate. A biophysical economic model of the US energy supply system is used to assess the impact of electric vehicles on the petroleum supply chain, addressing questions on market penetration and costs of upstream capital assets.

The Intersection of Biophysical Economics and Political Economy

Christopher Kennedy

Summary: This study examines potential distributions of wealth in the political economy based on biophysical economics, considering the influence of different sector incomes and energy prices. Historical data from Great Britain's economy between 1760 and 1913 is used to plot the trade-off between annual wages and profits per worker under different political-economic regimes, revealing possible alternative income distributions. Conclusions are drawn in the context of ecological economists' challenges in developing environmentally sustainable economies with fair resource sharing.

Capital, energy and carbon in the United States economy

Christopher Kennedy

Summary: This article examines the relationship between capital and energy in the US economy and finds that energy consumption did not increase despite the growth of capital assets. The study reveals that the proportion of intellectual property products in the capital stock increased, while the energy intensity of using capital decreased in the residential and manufacturing sectors. The research provides insights into understanding the connection between economic development and energy consumption, as well as the importance of decarbonization strategies.

A biophysical model of the industrial revolution

Christopher Kennedy

Summary: This article examines the biophysical characteristics of Britain's Industrial Revolution and their impacts on the economy, finding that stagnation in agricultural productivity and reduced efficiency in coal mining result in decreased growth of capital stock and significant changes in labor distribution.
