Novel polymeric additives in the preparation and modification of polymeric membranes: A comprehensive review

Nazanin Nasrollahi et al.

Summary: This review paper provides an overview of the role of polymeric additives in the fabrication of polymeric membranes. The additives can influence the formation of pores, permeability, hydrophilicity, and even the creation of desirable properties such as antifouling and antibacterial properties. Different methods of incorporating additives into polymeric matrix are explored to identify the best additives for various types of polymeric membranes. The compatibility of additive polymers with matrix polymers and the effectiveness of functional additives are also discussed.

On the Conductivity of Proton-Exchange Membranes Based on Multiblock Copolymers of Sulfonated Polysulfone and Polyphenylsulfone: An Experimental and Modeling Study

Nieves Urena et al.

Summary: The study examines the effects of relative humidity and degree of sulfonation on the performance of proton-exchange membranes based on multiblock copolymers. It is found that ionic conductivity increases with RH and non-linearly with DS, with a decrease in conductivity rate when DS is excessively high. The copolymer membranes show similar performance to Nafion under well-hydrated conditions and have the potential to be further optimized for better properties.

Triblock SEBS/DVB crosslinked and sulfonated membranes: Fuel cell performance and conductivity

Roberto Teruel-Juanes et al.

Summary: SEBS membranes with DVB as a crosslinking agent and post-sulfonation were evaluated for fuel cell applications. The study showed that membranes with mild post-sulfonation exhibited higher proton conductivity compared to those with excessive sulfonation, leading to promising power density in fuel cell performance. Despite challenges in charge transport, the membranes showed potential for use as cost-effective polyelectrolytes in fuel cells.

Study on Control of Polymeric Architecture of Sulfonated Hydrocarbon-Based Polymers for High-Performance Polymer Electrolyte Membranes in Fuel Cell Applications

Mijeong Kim et al.

Summary: Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is an eco-friendly energy conversion device that can convert chemical energy into electrical energy without harmful emissions. Nafion(R), a representative PFSA ionomer-based membrane, has high proton conductivity but drawbacks such as high cost and emission of pollutants during degradation. Efforts are being made to develop hydrocarbon-based PEMs with improved proton conductivity for practical fuel cell applications.
