Assessing the impact of urbanization on urban evapotranspiration and its components using a novel four-source energy balance model

Han Chen et al.

Summary: Urbanization has significant impacts on regional hydrological cycle, energy balance, and microclimate. However, the effects of urbanization on urban evapotranspiration (ET) and its components are still unclear. This study proposes a customized four-source energy balance model for urban areas (FSU model) and verifies its performance using actual data from Tianjin, China. The results show significant changes in urban ET, E, T, W, H, and BR with urbanization. The FSU model helps evaluate the urban heat island effect and supports water resources management in urban areas.

Climate More Important for Chinese Flood Changes Than Reservoirs and Land Use

Long Yang et al.

Summary: Despite intense human alterations, climate variations dominate the spatial pattern of changes in annual flood peak discharge in China. Regional flood increases are mainly associated with increasing precipitation, while regional decreases are due to decreased soil moisture in the North China Plain. Flood management policies in China should adapt to the effects of climate change beyond local measures.

Urbanization Impacts on Evapotranspiration Across Various Spatio-Temporal Scales

Amir Mazrooei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impacts of urbanization on evapotranspiration (ET) fluxes across different landscapes and timescales. The observed patterns show that the difference in ET between urban and non-urban areas is influenced by local hydroclimate, with arid regions experiencing increased ET and humid regions showing decreased ET. Cities in cold climates tend to evaporate more during winter due to increased energy availability from human activities. Urban areas in arid regions have increased ET due to water withdrawals and irrigation during drought conditions. These findings can help planners in integrating environmental conditions into urban landscape design and management.
