The effects of influence radius and drawdown cone on the areas related to the protection of water wells

Amin Ahmadi et al.

Summary: Determining a suitable protection zone around the pumping well is important for preserving the quality and quantity of water. While various definitions and methods have been developed to determine protective zones, it remains challenging to establish quantitative and qualitative protection zones. This study focused on investigating the drawdown cone and influence radius as characteristics of the influence zone, using the numerical MODFLOW model and comparing the results with analytical models. The influence radius, though a representative parameter, has limitations due to its dependence on definition.

Stochastic modeling of groundwater drawdown response induced by tunnel drainage

Cagri Gokdemir et al.

Summary: Tunnel designers often face challenges when dealing with the impact of tunnel drainage on groundwater. This paper introduces a stochastic modeling method for predicting groundwater drawdown, which takes into account the spatial characteristics of complex topography and hydrogeological parameters, leading to more accurate estimations of the impact of tunnel drainage on groundwater.

An analytical method for predicting the groundwater inflow to tunnels in a fractured aquifer

Yue Su et al.

Summary: A method for calculating hydraulic-head distribution and flow behaviors in fractures based on a fracture network model and cubic law was developed. The method treats the rock matrix as impermeable, with groundwater only flowing through the network formed by fractures and faults. The approach assumes that fractured aquifer behavior is equivalent to porous media behavior and can be applied to predict water inflow in fractured rock mass, especially where fractures and faults have much higher permeability than the rock matrix.

Effective Forchheimer Coefficient for Layered Porous Media

Alessandro Lenci et al.

Summary: This study focuses on inertial flow in porous media governed by the Forchheimer equation and its relation to domain heterogeneity at the field scale. It proposes a method to derive formulae for the effective Forchheimer coefficient in perfectly stratified media. The effective Forchheimer coefficient varies with flow direction and is influenced by factors such as heterogeneity, exponent c, and permeability distribution.

Scale Effect of the Model Extent on Seepage Analysis of Circular Tunnels under Drained Conditions

Jian Wu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of model extent on tunnel inflow, drawdown, and water pressure through numerical simulations. It proposes a comprehensive function to determine the optimum model extent. The results show that the optimum model extent decreases with increasing relative permeability for tunnel inflow and water pressure, while it increases for drawdown. A model extent of no less than 200 times the tunnel radius is recommended for accurate simulation results.

A new combined analytical-numerical method for evaluating the inflow rate into a tunnel excavated in a fractured rock mass

Alireza Shahbazi et al.

Summary: A new method is developed to evaluate the inflow rate to an underground tunnel excavated in a fractured rock mass, combining analytical and numerical tools. The method uses analytical formulas based on Darcy's and Cubic laws, considering discontinuities as main pathways for groundwater flow to calculate effective parameters for groundwater inflow rate.

Summary: This study developed a semi-empirical model to consider non-Darcian effects in predicting water inflow in fractured-rock aquifers. By numerical simulations and parameter integration method, the non-Darcian effect on water inflow can be quantitatively estimated and accurately predicted.

Assessing the impact of tunnelling on karst groundwater balance by using lumped parameter models

Bing-Qi Zhou et al.

Summary: Tunnelling activities have a significant impact on groundwater balance in karst aquifers. The study presented a modified lumped model to assess this impact and found that tunnel excavation captured a mean portion of 19% discharge from the aquifer system into the tunnel. Lumped models provide a useful tool for characterizing dominant factors governing groundwater response and evaluating groundwater budget changes induced by anthropogenic activities in karst regions.

Evaluation of hydrogeological impact of tunnel engineering in a karst aquifer by coupled discrete-continuum numerical simulations

Xiaokang Zheng et al.

Summary: The study utilized a coupled discrete-continuum modeling approach to analyze the impact of tunnel construction on karst groundwater systems. Tunnel construction led to widespread groundwater drawdown with a 30% decrease in total discharge through karst conduits. Simulation results predict that after completion of lining, the groundwater system will slowly approach a level 5-10m below the undisturbed level.
