Pore accessibility by wettable fluids in overmature marine shales of China: Investigations from contrast-matching small-angle neutron scattering (CM-SANS)

Mengdi Sun et al.

Summary: The characterization of pore accessibility in shale oil and gas reservoirs is essential but challenging. This study used contrast-matching small-angle neutron scattering (CM-SANS) and other experiments to investigate nanoscale pore accessibility characteristics and their controlling factors in overmature marine shale samples. A novel accessibility index was developed and used to analyze the accessibility of different wetting phases in nanoscale pore networks. The results showed that toluene filled higher pore volumes (>7 nm) due to the development of organic pores and their connection with inorganic pore systems, while water-accessible pores were observed within a pore size of less than 7 nm. The accessibility to water and toluene was controlled by pore surface wettability and pore connectivity. CM-SANS is an effective means of evaluating nanoscale pore accessibility in shale.

Combined effects of the chemical structure and nanopore development on water vapor/liquid adsorption in shale kerogen

Chu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interactions between water, chemical structure, and nanopore in shale gas reservoirs using experimental and simulation methods. The results show that water is preferentially adsorbed in micropores in the form of monolayer coverage at low relative humidity, while mesopores dominate the total water adsorption at high relative humidity. Simulation results reveal that water can exist in hydrophilic oxygen-containing structures in the form of monolayer coverage, and in hydrophobic carbon structures in the form of water clusters. The constructed molecular model helps to understand the microscopic mechanism of fluids-rock interactions.

The new multistage water adsorption model of Longmaxi Formation shale considering the spatial configuration relationship between organic matter and clay minerals

Zhi-Ye Gao et al.

Summary: The controlling factors and mechanisms of water adsorption by Longmaxi Formation shale were investigated. The water adsorption process was found to be divided into three stages, and two revised models considering the spatial configuration relationship between organic matter (OM) and clay minerals were proposed. The study reveals the significant effect of the spatial configuration relationship on the water adsorption process of shale.

Water adsorption isotherms on soil external particle surface by molecular simulation

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: Water adsorption isotherms on soil external particle surface are a macroscopic manifestation of atomistic scale soil-water interaction mechanisms, including van der Waals forces, surface hydration, cation hydration, and electrical double layer. A general framework based on Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulation provides a quantitative assessment of the impact of these mechanisms on water adsorption isotherms, revealing that different interaction mechanisms dictate the shape of adsorption isotherms and that divalent cations have a much stronger interaction with water molecules compared to univalent cations, increasing the adsorption capacity significantly.

Effect of adsorbed moisture on the pore size distribution of marine-continental transitional shales: Insights from lithofacies differences and clay swelling

Pei Li et al.

Summary: The distribution of pore water in gas shale reservoirs has a significant impact on gas content and resource evaluation. This study found that adsorbed moisture in transitional clay-rich shales can be divided into different types of water in micro- and non-micropores. Additionally, factors such as thermal maturity, total organic carbon, clay, and carbonate are correlated with adsorbed moisture and pore structure.

Dynamic fluid states in organic-inorganic nanocomposite: Implications for shale gas recovery and CO2 sequestration

Liang Huang et al.

Summary: This study conducted microscopic modeling for shale nanocomposites, revealing different gas recovery mechanisms during pressure depletion and CO2 sequestration. The study suggests CH4 adsorbed state as a potential target for enhanced shale gas recovery. Additionally, increasing water content reduces CH4 recovery during pressure depletion but improves CH4 recovery during CO2 injection.

Water Uptake Behavior and Influence Factors of Longmaxi Shale: Implications from Water Physisorption and Imbibition Measurements

Changhai Hou et al.

Summary: Water uptake behavior in Longmaxi shales was investigated using water vapor sorption and spontaneous imbibition experiments. It was found that controlling factors for water vapor adsorption varied with relative humidity, with pores around 3 nm in size playing a major role under high humidity conditions. These findings contribute to a better understanding of fracturing fluid loss and optimization of shale gas production.

Impact of Degassing Time and Temperature on the Estimation of Pore Attributes in Shale

Deependra Pratap Singh et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of degassing time and temperature on low-pressure gas adsorption behavior of shales. It was found that degassing temperature strongly impacts pore attributes, while degassing duration has minimal influence. Reliable porosity estimates were obtained at 110 degrees C, with distinct changes observed at higher temperatures.

Understanding water accessibility and pore information of overmature marine shales using water vapor sorption

Ji Chen et al.

Summary: A study on pore structure and hydration behavior of marine shale samples shows that organic matter porosity accounts for 28-67% of total porosity, with majority of organic matter porosity and 23-73% of inorganic porosity located in pores less than 10 nm in width. Water-derived pore size distribution generates greater pore volume than nitrogen-derived distribution, with clay content positively affecting the gap between the two.

Physical property and hydrocarbon enrichment characteristics of tight oil reservoir in Chang 7 division of Yanchang Formation, Xin'anbian oilfield, Ordos Basin, China

Wei-Bo Zhao et al.

Summary: Xin'anbian Oilfield in the Ordos Basin is the first large tight oilfield discovered in China, with significant increases in production of tight oil in recent years, indicating great exploration potential for Chang7 tight oil. The study systematically summarizes and analyzes the forming conditions of tight oil reservoirs based on hydrocarbon generation, sedimentary reservoirs, and hydrocarbon migration and accumulation, revealing characteristics such as porosity, permeability, and pore diameters of the reservoirs. The high-quality source rocks and sand bodies in subaqueous distributary channels play a crucial role in the formation and accumulation of the tight oil reservoirs.
