Resource Selection Patterns of Immature Eastern Hellbenders in North Carolina, USA

Summary: The Hellbender, a giant salamander inhabiting streams in the eastern United States, has been experiencing population declines. Our study investigates the habitat use of immature Hellbenders and its association with abiotic factors that influence survival. We found that immature Hellbenders select home ranges based on reduced water velocity and the presence of unembedded cobble beds, and prefer unembedded mid-sized cover as microhabitat within their home range. Understanding the requirements of immature Hellbenders is crucial for accurately assessing population health and designing effective conservation efforts.
