Photosensitivity sources of dissolved organic matter from wastewater treatment plants and their mediation effect on 17α-ethinylestradiol photodegradation

Zhicheng Liao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photodegradation behavior of 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) mediated by diverse dissolved organic matter (DOM) solutions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The findings revealed that the humification degree of DOM positively influenced the rate of EE2 photodegradation, with humic-like components playing a significant role. Additionally, DOM extracted from the anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2/O) process had the highest photodegradation rate and water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) was found to have the strongest promotion effect on EE2 degradation.

The desorption mechanism of dissolved organic matter on pollutants and the change of biodiversity during sediment dredging

Xing Wan et al.

Summary: Sediment dredging is effective in controlling endogenous pollution in lakes, but little attention has been paid to the desorption mechanism of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on pollutants and the change of biodiversity. This study investigated the physicochemical properties of DOM in sediment and its correlation with the desorption behavior of pollutants and aquatic organism biodiversity, using a sediment dredging project in Dianchi Lake as an example.

Environmental and human health risk assessment of mixture of Covid-19 treating pharmaceutical drugs in environmental waters

Minashree Kumari et al.

Summary: This study assessed the ecological and human health risks exposure of COVID-19 pharmaceuticals in environmental waters, identifying algae as the most sensitive species to pharmaceutical drugs, with ritonavir posing a major risk. The maximum allowable concentration level for the mixture of pharmaceuticals was found to be 0.53 mg/L.

Evaluation of degradation performance toward antiviral drug ribavirin using advanced oxidation process and its relations to ecotoxicity evolution

Xiaoping Wu et al.

Summary: The rapid spread of COVID-19 has led to increased consumption of antiviral drugs, which are discharged into wastewater, posing risks to the environment and human health. In this study, the toxicity evolution of the antiviral drug ribavirin during its degradation process was investigated. The results showed that ribavirin was effectively eliminated, but the formation and decomposition of transformation products led to changes in ecotoxicity.

Occurrence and risk assessment of typical PPCPs and biodegradation pathway of ribavirin in wastewater treatment plants

Qixin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, removal efficiency, and risk assessment of typical PPCPs in wastewater treatment plants in China. The results showed that PPCPs were detected in high concentrations, with relatively low removal efficiency. The MBBR process showed higher removal capacity compared to the AAAO process. The study also identified the biodegradation pathway of a specific PPCP and assessed the ecological risks associated with PPCP contamination.

The role of trace N-Oxyl compounds as redox mediator in enhancing antiviral ribavirin elimination in UV/Chlorine process

Qiyuan Sun et al.

Summary: This study found that the degradation of ribavirin in water can be enhanced by TEMPO and NHPI, which rely on the generation of reactive forms that mainly depend on radicals. At the same time, the two N-oxyl compounds also inhibit the generation of harmful substances by hindering the reaction of free chlorine with other substances.

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, various drugs were detected in water bodies near medical institutions, with some posing potential risks to aquatic organisms, highlighting the need for further attention. While the pandemic did not cause serious pollution, effective measures are required to address the increased use of drugs and potential ecological risks.

Photochemical characterization of paddy water during rice cultivation: Formation of reactive intermediates for As(III) oxidation

Yu Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photochemical processes in paddy water, identifying DOM-D-3*, O-1(2), and OH· as the main reactive intermediates with quantified quantum yields and steady-state concentrations. The findings demonstrated that DOM properties and nitrite concentration were key factors influencing RIs generation, and RIs significantly enhanced arsenite oxidation in paddy water. The study provides new insights into arsenite abiotic transformation pathways in paddy soil and water.

Degradation of Congo red by UV photolysis of nitrate: Kinetics and degradation mechanism

Shishun Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the efficiency of CR removal in the UV/NO3- process was high, mainly due to the role of (OH)• and (NO2)-N• in the degradation of CR. Increasing NO3- dosage can enhance k(obs), but high CR concentrations can decrease k(obs). Accelerating NO3- photolysis under acidic conditions while decelerating CR degradation, and decreasing kobs under alkaline conditions were also observed.

Predicted occurrence, ecotoxicological risk and environmentally acquired resistance of antiviral drugs associated with COVID-19 in environmental waters

Keisuke Kuroda et al.

Summary: Antiviral drugs used for treating COVID-19 patients can pose potential ecotoxicological risks in aquatic environments. Efforts are needed to improve the management and treatment of drug residues in wastewater to mitigate environmental impacts. While certain drugs may pose high risks to aquatic organisms, the likelihood of wild animals developing drug resistance is estimated to be low.
