Critical Review of UV-Advanced Reduction Processes for the Treatment of Chemical Contaminants in Water

Benjamin D. Fennell et al.

Summary: UV-advanced reduction processes (UV-ARP) are an advanced water treatment technology that utilizes reductive transformation of chemical contaminants. This Review evaluates the photochemical kinetics, substrate scope, and optimization of UV-ARP. The absence of key reactive species quantities in UV-ARP literature has made it challenging to fully understand the impact of operating conditions and water matrix components. The substrate scope of UV-ARP is biased towards contaminants resistant to advanced oxidation processes. Further research is needed to explore the influence of water matrix components on optimization strategies.

Role of oxygen and superoxide radicals in promoting H2O2 production during VUV/UV radiation of water

Jinying Du et al.

Summary: Vacuum UV radiation can generate hydroxyl radicals and H2O2 through the homolysis and ionization of water. Sufficient dissolved oxygen promotes the production and formation rate of H2O2, while UV254 radiation induces the decomposing of H2O2. The study also highlights the unfavorable effects of alkaline conditions and certain anions on H2O2 production.
