Geochemistry and mineralogy of the sediments in the New Britain shelf-trench continuum, offshore Papua New Guinea: Insights into sediment provenance and burial in hadal trenches

Gang Lin et al.

Summary: The study in the New Britain Trench area in Papua New Guinea revealed that sediments were primarily sourced from surrounding islands' intermediate volcanogenic materials, with a significant influence from Rabaul Volcano in the west and the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni volcanic chain in the east. Analysis of pollen and spores showed a dominance of Cyperaceae plants in the sediment, while differences in major and minor elements as well as Sr-Nd isotopes suggested a riverine sediment source for the upper 4 cm sediments at the trench axis site NBT01. The findings suggest that terrigenous riverine materials are rapidly transported and buried at the trench axis, highlighting the important role of hadal trenches in trapping terrigenous materials and influencing the fate of terrigenous materials in the deep ocean.

Evidence for Long-Term Anthropogenic Pollution: The Hadal Trench as a Depository and Indicator for Dissemination of Antibiotic Resistance Genes

Huiying Yang et al.

Summary: Research on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in Mariana Trench sediments shows a sudden increase in abundance and diversity, with 63.6% of the ARG pollution predicted to have anthropogenic sources. This indicates that human activities have already permeated into the deepest ocean regions, emphasizing the need for better pollution control measures to prevent the accumulation and potential threat of ARG dissemination.
