Sources, transfers and the fate of heavy metals in soil-wheat systems: The case of lead (Pb)/zinc (Zn) smelting region

Jun Xu et al.

Summary: This study examined the environmental effects of smelting activities on farmland soil and evaluated the enrichment, transfer, and health risk of heavy metals (HMs) in soil-wheat systems. The results showed that HMs from smelter waste were transferred to the surrounding soil, with enrichment in soil-wheat systems mainly determined by total HM concentration and soil pH. Cd was identified as the priority pollutant in soil-wheat systems, and its presence affected the transfer of Cu, Mn, and Pb from soil to wheat roots. Certain molecular functional groups in wheat were found to be involved in detoxifying HMs. The consumption of wheat grain was associated with notable non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks. This study highlights the importance of addressing the issues arising from smelting activities on agricultural soils and suggests considering alternative crops to ensure food security.

Bin Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the comparative transport behaviors of Cd2+ and CrO42- in water-saturated soil columns under different hydrochemical and hydraulic conditions. The results showed that high solution pH inhibited the transport of Cd(II), while the migration of Cr(VI) was promoted at high pH. Efficient removal of Cd(II) by phosphate-modified biochars derived from apple tree branches: Processes, mechanisms, and application

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: Phosphate-modified biochar is an effective material for cadmium immobilization, with high adsorption capacity. In this study, a series of modified biochars were prepared by co-pyrolysis of apple tree branches and potassium phosphates, and tested for cadmium removal. The results showed that the addition of orthophosphates increased the specific surface area and total pore volume of the biochar, and enhanced the adsorption capacity for cadmium ions. Furthermore, the presence of phosphates led to the formation of Cd-P-precipitates, further enhancing the adsorption effect. The results also demonstrated that the modified BC-3 exhibited significant removal efficiency for cadmium ions in polluted water bodies, and also showed some removal effect for cadmium ions in soil.

Effect of pyrolysis temperature of biochar on Cd, Pb and As bioavailability and bacterial community composition in contaminated paddy soil

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the bioavailability of Cd, Pb, and As in contaminated paddy soil, as well as the bacterial community structure. The results showed that biochar decreased the bioavailability of Cd and Pb, with wood sawdust biochar performing better than peanut shell biochar. The pyrolysis temperature had no significant effect on Cd bioavailability, but higher temperatures resulted in decreased Pb bioavailability. The feedstock played a more important role in altering bacterial diversity and community composition than pyrolysis temperature. The addition of peanut shell biochar increased the diversity of soil bacteria through elevating soil dissolved carbon. Overall, biochar can be an effective tool in reducing the bioavailability of heavy metals in contaminated soil.
