Advances on the Influence of Methylmercury Exposure during Neurodevelopment

Jingjing Pan et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the advances in the study of neurodevelopmental toxicity caused by mercury exposure during pregnancy, as well as the molecular mechanisms of related pathways. Exposure to methylmercury during gestation can lead to long-term neurodevelopmental defects in embryos and infants, and the mechanisms behind it are not fully understood. Current evidence suggests that oxidative damage, excitotoxicity, calcium ion imbalance, mitochondrial dysfunction, epigenetic changes, and other molecular mechanisms play important roles in methylmercury-induced neurodevelopmental toxicity.

Summary: Mercury pollution and climate change have led to the ubiquitous presence of mercury compounds in the environment, which are known for their toxicity. Human exposure to low levels of methylmercury through consumption of fish and seafood is still controversial in terms of its health consequences. This study reveals the differences in mercury speciation between individuals with acute and chronic exposure, indicating the need to reconsider the relevance of acute exposure studies as proxy for chronic low-level exposure.
