Removal of saxitoxin and anatoxin-a by PAC in the presence and absence of microcystin-LR and/or cyanobacterial cells

Justin Rorar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal efficiency of cyanotoxins by powdered activated carbon (PAC) and found that higher PAC doses led to higher cyanotoxin removals. It was also demonstrated that PAC can effectively remove multiple cyanotoxins in water with pH values between 6 and 9.

Progress on the investigation and monitoring of marine phycotoxins in China

Yubo Liang et al.

Summary: Marine toxins associated with shellfish poisoning have been investigated and monitored along the coast of China. Traditional monitoring methods have been replaced by new techniques, leading to the discovery of many new marine toxins. The most serious marine toxin in Chinese coastal waters is paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), but other toxins such as diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP), ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP), palytoxin (PLTX), and neurotoxin beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) are also present.

A Carboxyl-Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework Synthesized in a Deep Eutectic Solvent for Dye Adsorption

Bin Dong et al.

Summary: A novel carboxyl-functionalized COF (TpPa-COOH) was successfully synthesized using a deep eutectic solvent (Bu4NBr/Im), showing excellent selective adsorption performance for methylene blue and safranine T. The adsorption isotherms of TpPa-COOH for the dyes were well modeled using a Langmuir isotherm, with a higher adsorption capacity observed for safranine T compared to methylene blue. These results could provide guidance for the green synthesis of adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

Porous Covalent Organic Polymers for Efficient Fluorocarbon-Based Adsorption Cooling

Jian Zheng et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of porous covalent organic polymers for fluorocarbon adsorption cooling applications, demonstrating high R134a adsorption capacities and unique isotherms for COP-2 and COP-3. Molecular simulations showed the crucial role of mesoporous defects in the unusual adsorption behavior, with a direct correlation between higher fluorocarbon adsorption capacities and increasing pore volumes induced by defects. These defect-containing porous COPs show promise for adsorption-based cooling applications due to their high porosities, excellent reversibility, fast kinetics, and large operating windows.

Solvent and catalyst free preparation of sulfonic acid functionalized magnetic covalent organic polymer as efficient adsorbent for malachite green removal

Ke Liu et al.

Summary: A series of -SO3H functionalized magnetic covalent organic polymers (M-TpBD-SO3H) were synthesized within a few minutes under solvent-free and catalyst-free conditions. The materials exhibited excellent adsorption properties towards malachite green (MG), with the highest adsorption capacity reaching 333.4 mg g(-1) when all the building blocks used were BDSA. Additionally, the materials showed selective adsorption of MG from mixed solutions and demonstrated good magnetic separation ability and reusability, making them promising candidates for environmental water remediation.

Bio-inspired hydroxylation imidazole linked covalent organic polymers for uranium extraction from aqueous phases

Run-Han Yan et al.

Summary: This study developed a series of adsorbents for uranium extraction inspired by the interaction between imidazole affinity ligand of histidine and uranium. The covalent organic polymers showed promising extraction abilities with high selectivity for uranium, highlighting the potential for environmental protection and human health. The synergistic effects between hydroxyl groups and imidazole linkages contributed to the high efficiency of uranium extraction.

Workflow of the pre-chromatographic 'Lawrence' method for bivalves contaminated with Gymnodinium catenatum's paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins

Paulo Vale et al.

Summary: Saxitoxin and its analogues are neurotoxins causing paralytic shellfish poisoning, and the Lawrence method is a labor-intensive prechromatographic oxidation technique approved in the EU to replace mouse testing. The method uses two solid-phase extraction steps and two oxidation steps to quantify various analogues in contaminated bivalves. A study on a PSP episode in Portugal in 2018 led to a workflow based on total detectable toxin concentration, determining the need for further quantifying certain analogues. Samples below 1.6 μmol/kg N1?H toxins required no further processing, while samples above 3 μmol/kg needed quantification of B2 and dcNEO, and above 10 μmol/kg required quantification of C3+4. Samples between 1.6 and 3.2 μmol/kg showed that although B2 could be quantified in most samples, its low toxicity only added a small amount to the total toxicity.

Prussian blue immobilized on covalent organic polymer-grafted granular activated carbon for cesium adsorption from water

Younggyo Seo et al.

Summary: Prussian blue (PB) immobilized on granular activated carbon (GAC) through covalent organic polymer (COP) grafting showed excellent stability, high cesium adsorption capacity, and potential for application in water treatment systems. The method proved effective in both artificial and actual river water samples, as well as in continuous column experiments.
