Non-target screening for the identification of migrating compounds from reusable plastic bottles into drinking water

Selina Tisler et al.

Summary: This study found that chemicals from reusable plastic sports bottles can migrate into drinking water, including plasticizers, antioxidants, and photoinitiators. It also identified several compounds that have never been reported before, such as photoinitiators with potential endocrine-disrupting effects and the plastic additive DEET.

The characterization and influence factors of semi-volatile compounds from mechanically recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) by combining GC?GC-TOFMS and chemometrics

Siliang Wu et al.

Summary: A non-targeted method for screening the semi-volatile compounds of mechanically recycled PET for food contact materials was developed, and multiple chemometrics methods were used to analyze the data and investigate the potential influence factors. The results showed that total dissolution with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry was the most effective method. 97 compounds were classified into 4 levels based on their difference levels, with 1-Methyl-2-pyrrolidinone recognized as the primary difference indicator. The contaminant was mainly derived from residuum of non-food consumer products. The specific types of contaminants and process parameters of the recycling, such as moisture content, properties of rPET, and temperature, were found to be potential key factors affecting the presence of semi-volatile compounds in mechanically recycled rPET.

Screening of volatile decay markers of minced pork by headspace-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and chemometrics

Xuechao Song et al.

Summary: Headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HSSPME-GC-MS) was used to analyze volatile compounds in minced pork meat during storage, with the origin of aromatic hydrocarbons in pork being verified by a migration test. Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were utilized to characterize the profile of volatile compounds and identify potential volatile markers associated with pork spoilage. Three compounds were identified as additional indicators for quality control of pork based on their importance in discrimination of pork with different storage times.

Identification of recycled polyethylene and virgin polyethylene based on untargeted migrants

Zhi-Feng Chen et al.

Summary: This study successfully discriminated recycled PE from virgin PE using untargeted gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometer analysis and multivariate data analysis, identifying markers for establishing a classification model. Additives and pollutants were found to be important factors for distinguishing between the two, with linear discrimination analysis showing better stability and predictability in the classification model.

Safety concerns of recycling postconsumer polyolefins for food contact uses: Regarding (semi-)volatile migrants untargetedly screened

Qi-Zhi Su et al.

Summary: The study found that most of the compounds identified through chemical testing may not pose a risk to human health, with a majority being food additives or components that do not harm the human body; some high molecular weight substances require further study. The results are informative for recyclers and policymakers in recycling polyolefins for safe food contact materials.

Decontamination efficiencies of post-consumer high-density polyethylene milk bottles and prioritization of high concern volatile migrants

Qi-Zhi Su et al.

Summary: Analysis was conducted on volatile substances in recycled HDPE pellets and flakes from postconsumer milk bottles, showing variations in chemicals among different recyclers but consistency within batches from the same recycler. Double washing and additional decontamination techniques reduced intensities of most chemicals detected, with particular attention needed for certain compounds like octocrylene and 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate. Migration tests revealed 265 substances, with concern raised for 58 based on toxicity, suggesting that rHDPE with low non-milk-bottle content could be safe for direct contact with low-fat food while caution should be taken for high-fat food due to specific compounds like 1-tetradecene, octocrylene, and 2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate.
