Climatic CO2 level-driven changes in the bioavailability, accumulation, and health risks of Cd and Pb in paddy soil-rice systems

Yabo Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of climate change on the accumulation and bioavailability of Cd and Pb in rice plants and paddy soils. The results showed that climate change accelerated the accumulation of Cd and Pb in rice grains, increased the bioavailability of Cd and Pb in soil, and affected the composition of soil bacterial communities. It was also found that climate change significantly increased the carcinogenic risk for children and adults, posing a major risk to future safe rice production.

Foliar application of selenium affecting pollen viability, grain chalkiness, and transporter genes in cadmium accumulating rice cultivar: A pot study

Falguni Barman et al.

Summary: It was found that under Cd stress, rice grain quality and quantity are compromised, affecting human health. Previous research has shown that Selenium (Se) can mitigate Cd stress in rice, but its role in rescuing Cd-induced damage in the reproductive parts of rice plants has not been studied. This study investigated the mechanism of Se-mediated alleviation of Cd-stress induced damage to pollen viability, germination rate, and grain chalkiness. The results showed that Se supplementation decreased ROS accumulation in the reproductive parts, improved pollen viability and germination rate, and prevented Cd translocation from leaves to grains. Therefore, foliar spray of Se could be a cost-effective strategy to prevent Cd-induced yield loss and quality reduction in rice.

Plant glutamate receptors mediate a bet-hedging strategy between regeneration and defense

Marcela Hernandez-Coronado et al.

Summary: This study reveals that plant GLRs play a role in both defense responses and regeneration through dynamic changes in chromatin and transcription. Inhibition of GLR activity increases regeneration efficiency in multiple organ repair systems. This finding provides insights into the trade-off between defense and regeneration in plants.

GLUTAMATE RECEPTOR-like gene OsGLR3.4 is required for plant growth and systemic wound signaling in rice (Oryza sativa)

Bo Yu et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the physiological roles of glutamate receptor-like channels (GLRs) in Arabidopsis, but the functions of GLRs in rice are still largely unknown. Knockout of OsGLR3.4 in rice results in growth defects regulated by brassinosteroid (BR) and decreased BR sensitivity. OsGLR3.4 is found to be a Ca2+-permeable channel and plays a crucial role in Ca2+ influx, actin filament organization, vesicle trafficking, and root-to-shoot systemic wound signaling in rice. Additionally, OsGLR3.4-mediated systemic wound response is synergistically regulated by BR signaling, highlighting the importance of OsGLR3.4 in plant growth and responses to mechanical wounding.

Rice organs concentrate cadmium by chelation of amino acids containing dicarboxyl groups and enhance risks to human and environmental health in Cd-contaminated areas

Weijie Xue et al.

Summary: Rice plants grown in paddy fields with Cd content of 0.3-1.5 mg kg(-1) had Cd quantities in mots and straws 2-7 times higher than that in topsoil. Planting low-Cd-accumulating (LCA) cultivar reduced hazard quotients for consumers, but had similar ecological risks as high-accumulating (HCA) cultivars. Insoluble Cd content in nodes linearly increased with soil Cd content, companied by significant decline of certain amino acids.

Glutamate: A multifunctional amino acid in plants

Hong-Sheng Liao et al.

Summary: Glutamate is a versatile metabolite and signaling molecule in plants, involved in nitrogen assimilation, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and energy production. It serves as the primary amino donor and can conjugate with various compounds for the production of important substances. Glutamate acts as a signaling molecule to regulate plant growth, development, and defense responses through ligand-gated receptors and other unknown receptors.

Summary: This study reviews the evolution of NMDA receptors (NMDARs) within ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) and discusses their unique functionalities in the nervous system. The evolution of NMDAR motifs and sequences shapes their structure and function, while differences and commonalities between different iGluRs are also traced.

Structure of the Arabidopsis Glutamate Receptor-like Channel GLR3.2 Ligand-Binding Domain

Shanti Pal Gangwar et al.

Summary: The structures of Arabidopsis thaliana GLR3.2 LBD show similarities to iGluRs, but with differences in certain secondary structure elements. Mutation R133A significantly increases channel constitutive activity, suggesting that mutating the critical residue for agonist binding leads to a more stable closed clamshell conformation.

Down-regulation of OsMYB103L distinctively alters beta-1,4-glucan polymerization and cellulose microfibers assembly for enhanced biomass enzymatic saccharification in rice

Leiming Wu et al.

Summary: The study identified a novel rice mutant encoding a R2R3-MYB transcription factor and generated RNAi-silenced transgenic lines for OsMYB103L. It found significantly reduced cellulose levels and altered cellulose nanofibers assembly in the mutant and RNAi lines, leading to enhanced biomass enzymatic saccharification. Additionally, RNA sequencing and DAP-seq analyses indicated that OsMYB103L may specifically mediate cellulose biosynthesis and microfibril assembly.
