Efficient removal of organic compounds from shale gas wastewater by coupled ozonation and moving-bed-biofilm submerged membrane bioreactor

Xinyu Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the coupled system of MBBF-SMBR showed higher efficiency and removal rates for organics in shale gas wastewater compared to SMBR, with lower total membrane resistance in MBBF-SMBR system. Enhanced gene allocation for membrane transport and nitrogen metabolism was identified in MBBF-SMBR biofilm, indicating significant industrial application potential for organics removal from SGW.

Characterization of microbial communities and functions in shale gas wastewaters and sludge: Implications for pretreatment

Shangbo Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that microbial richness and diversity were significantly higher in sludge from impoundments compared to flowback water. There is a great potential for using indigenous microorganisms for biodegrading organic compounds in wastewater, and pretreatment of wastewater was effective in removing organic compounds. Additionally, highly toxic compounds can be effectively eliminated in reactors.

Beyond treatment technology: Understanding motivations and barriers for wastewater treatment and reuse in unconventional energy production

Cristian A. Robbins et al.

Summary: Unconventional oil and gas (UOG) production requires a significant amount of freshwater and produces substantial volumes of wastewater. While technology development is important for UOG wastewater treatment, other factors such as regulations, economics, system logistics, and public perception also play crucial roles in the decision-making process. Efforts to address the barriers of treatment technology, regulatory compliance, economic feasibility, and social acceptance are necessary for the successful implementation of UOG wastewater management practices.

An efficient system of aerogel adsorbent combined with membranes for reuse of shale gas wastewater

Yuanhui Liu et al.

Summary: This study combined porous biochar aerogel (PBA) with ultrafiltration (UF)-nanofiltration (NF) to achieve efficient removal of organic pollutants and divalent ions in shale gas flowback and produced water (SGFPW). The results showed that PBA-UF-NF process effectively reduced membrane fouling and demonstrated potential for internal reuse of SGFPW.

Summary: This study proposes a new oxidation-biologically active filtration-ultrafiltration-reverse osmosis process for the external reuse of shale gas wastewater. The results show that oxidation pretreatment can improve the removal efficiency of organic matter and reduce membrane fouling, and the effluent meets the water quality standards for reuse.

Shale gas wastewater characterization: Comprehensive detection, evaluation of valuable metals, and environmental risks of heavy metals and radionuclides

Wancen Xie et al.

Summary: For the first time, this study identifies the elements present in shale gas wastewater (SGW) from the Sichuan Basin and analyzes their recycling opportunities and risk potentials. Most of the metal elements in SGW exist at very low concentrations, making it economically infeasible for recovery. However, salts, strontium, lithium, and gallium have higher concentrations and market demands, indicating great potential for recovery. The radioactivity in the SGW is also higher than the safety range, highlighting the need for safe reuse methods.

Organic compounds in Weiyuan shale gas produced water: Identification, detection and rejection by ultrafiltration-reverse osmosis processes

Yu Sun et al.

Summary: The study focused on the quantification of organic pollutants in flowback and produced water to design effective treatment strategies and predict environmental toxicity in unconventional energy production. The analysis of produced water from the Weiyuan shale gas play in China revealed oxygen-containing organic compounds as the dominant type, with highly unsaturated phenolic and aliphatic compounds identified as main components. Advanced membrane treatment achieved significant removal rates for compounds such as dimethylbenzylamine, but low molecular weight chemicals like DMBA still posed potential environmental risks even after treatment.
