Heterogenous Iron Oxide Assemblages for Use in Catalytic Ozonation: Reactivity, Kinetics, and Reaction Mechanism

Xiangtong Kong et al.

Summary: This study presents the preparation and performance of an Al2O3-supported Fe catalyst for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO). The NS-Fe-Al2O3 catalyst demonstrated significantly improved removal of organic pollutants compared to conventional catalysts. It also exhibited resistance to inhibitory effects of chloride and sulfate ions commonly found in industrial effluents.

Influence of salinity on the heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process: Implications to treatment of high salinity wastewater

Yuting Yuan et al.

Summary: The presence of salts, particularly chloride ions, significantly influences the performance of both conventional and catalytic ozonation processes by affecting the rate and extent of organic compound degradation. This influence is due to scavenging of O-3, transformation of organics to more hydrophobic forms, and inhibition of hydroxyl radicals. Through appropriate choice of catalyst, this effect can be mitigated to some extent.

Synchronous removal of pharmaceutical contaminants and inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms in real hospital wastewater by electro-peroxone process

Yahan Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly efficient E-peroxone process with graphite felt as ODE was developed for the simultaneous removal of pharmaceutical contaminants and inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms in real hospital wastewater. The TOC removal rate of real hospital wastewater could reach 93.9% under optimal conditions. Furthermore, 110 pharmaceutical compounds were efficiently degraded in the E-peroxone system, demonstrating its effectiveness in eliminating pharmaceuticals. The E-peroxone process also exhibited excellent disinfection effects and could completely inactivate Escherichia coli in the hospital wastewater.

Caveats in the Use of Tertiary Butyl Alcohol as a Probe for Hydroxyl Radical Involvement in Conventional Ozonation and Catalytic Ozonation Processes

Shikha Garg et al.

Summary: This study highlights the limitations of using tert-butanol (TBA) to determine the contribution of hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) in organic oxidation processes. The findings suggest that TBA cannot access surface-located (OH)-O-center dot formed during certain oxidation processes, and it can interfere with the adsorption and removal of organics on the catalyst surface. The presence of TBA may also affect the stability of ozone and promote direct oxidation of ozone-reactive organics or surface-mediated oxidation. Caution should be exercised when interpreting observations in the presence of TBA, and further experimentation is needed to confirm/reject the role of (OH)-O-center dot in organic oxidation.

Kinetic Modeling-Assisted Mechanistic Understanding of the Catalytic Ozonation Process Using Cu-Al Layered Double Hydroxides and Copper Oxide Catalysts

Yuting Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, copper aluminum layered hydroxides and copper oxide were used as catalysts for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation, targeting the removal of oxalate and formate contaminants. The role of the catalyst in contaminant removal was elucidated, with Cu-Al LDHs facilitating slow decay of O-3 to form surface hydroxyl radicals, while CuO rapidly transforms O-3 into surface-located hydroxyl radicals and/or other oxidants. Futile consumption of surface-located oxidants via interaction with the catalyst surface was minimal for Cu-Al LDHs, but becomes significant with higher CuO dosages.
