Weakened Cd toxicity to fungi under coexistence of Pb in solution

Summary: The coexistence of heavy metals can lead to complex toxicity in microorganisms in aquatic systems. This study investigated the effects of Pb2+ on Cd2+ toxicity in Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and found that the addition of Pb2+ significantly weakened the toxicity of Cd2+. Furthermore, Pb2+ affected cell counts, polysaccharide concentrations, and cell morphology.

Oxide of porous graphitized carbon as recoverable functional adsorbent that removes toxic metals from water

Summary: In this study, a GO-like material PGCO was fabricated from oxidizing porous graphitized carbon (PGC), which showed a high oxidation degree and insolubility in water, offering a higher adsorption efficiency for heavy metals and successful regeneration by acid treatment. These results suggest that PGCO could be a promising alternative adsorbent for remediating toxic metal-contaminated waters.

Summary: The adverse outcome of industrialization is the contamination of the ecosystem with toxic heavy metals. These metals negatively affect microbial systems, but microbes have developed resistance mechanisms such as biosorption, bioaccumulation, biotransformation, and efflux of metal ions. Fungal cells respond to metal exposure by forming metal nanoparticles, which can immobilize metals in less toxic forms. Understanding how fungi resist metal toxicity can lead to the development of techniques for detoxification and removal of metals from the environment.
