Haihan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the abundance of nirS gene and the structure of denitrifying bacterial community in two drinking water reservoirs using qPCR and sequencing techniques. The results showed differences in water quality between the two reservoirs, and Paracoccus sp. R-24615 and Staphylococcus sp. N23 were identified as keystones species. Additionally, water quality and sampling time significantly influenced the denitrifying bacterial community.

Analysis of bacterial community functional diversity in late-stage shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) ponds using Biolog EcoPlates and PICRUSt2

Qiong Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structural and functional diversity of bacterial communities in water and sediment samples from shrimp ponds using high-throughput sequencing and community level physiological profiling (CLPP) methods. The results showed that the genetic and functional diversity of microbial communities in sediment was significantly higher than that in water. Actinobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and Firmicutes were positively correlated with carbon source utilization in water samples, while Proteobacteria showed a significant positive correlation in sediment. Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between predicted function and actual metabolic profiles in both water and sediment samples.

Effects of hydrogen peroxide on Scenedesmus obliquus: Cell growth, antioxidant enzyme activity and intracellular protein fingerprinting

Haihan Zhang et al.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an effective algicide widely used in controlling algal blooms, but its impact on algal cells remains unclear. This study investigated the physiological and proteomic changes in Scenedesmus obliquus under different H2O2 concentrations, revealing inhibition of cell growth and photosynthetic activity, increased SOD and CAT activity, and metabolic suppression. Proteomic analysis identified 251 differentially expressed proteins, showing enrichment in metabolic pathways, photosynthesis, and stress responses, highlighting their importance in resisting oxidative stress.

Iron-Activated Carbon Systems to Enhance Aboriginal Aerobic Denitrifying Bacterial Consortium for Improved Treatment of Micro-Polluted Reservoir Water: Performances, Mechanisms, and Implications

Yuwei Huang et al.

Summary: The use of granular activated carbon with different forms of iron as carriers stimulates aboriginal microorganisms to effectively remove pollutants from micro-polluted water sources. Iron promotes the physical and chemical removal of pollutants and alters bacterial distribution and interaction, facilitating pollutant transformation and reduction. This study provides an innovative strategy to enhance in situ remediation of micro-pollution in waterbodies.

Spatial and seasonal change in algal community structure and its interaction with nutrient dynamics in a gravel-bed urban river

Feng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that harmful algal blooms in urban gravel-bed rivers are influenced by seasonal variations and nitrogen concentrations, with harmful Cyanophyta mainly present in the hot season. Additionally, downstream nutrient and Chla concentrations were significantly higher than upstream, indicating the significant impact of human activities on nutrient levels and algal growth.

Cooperation triggers nitrogen removal and algal inhibition by actinomycetes during landscape water treatment: Performance and metabolic activity

Ben Ma et al.

Summary: This study discovered a co-cultivation method of actinomycetes that effectively removes nitrogen from polluted water under aerobic conditions. Co-cultivation significantly increased the concentrations of adenosine triphosphate and electron-transmission system activity, demonstrating excellent carbon source metabolism activity. However, the co-culture system may restrict the diversity of indigenous denitrifying bacterial communities.

Bacterial community structure and metabolic activity of drinking water pipelines in buildings: A new perspective on dual effects of hydrodynamic stagnation and algal organic matter invasion

Haihan Zhang et al.

Summary: Eutrophication and algal blooms are global issues that negatively affect the treatment process of drinking water. This study found that the release of algal organic matter (AOM) caused rapid degradation of residual chlorine and an increase in nitrite-nitrogen concentration. Additionally, the total bacterial counts showed a temporary increase and subsequent decrease. AOM significantly altered the utilization capacity and preference for carbon sources, impacting the microbial community structure. These findings provide a scientific basis for understanding the evolution of drinking water quality under algae bloom pollution.

Effect of aquaculture water eutrophication on color development in Biolog EcoPlates

Qiong Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that original water samples from intensive Litopenaeus vannamei culture ponds exhibited delayed color development and reduced microbial metabolic activity compared to tenfold diluted samples, possibly due to accumulation of NO2-N and NO3-N in the aquaculture ponds. Both community-level physiological profiles (CLPP) and microbial community structure were significantly influenced by NO2-N and NO3-N. It is recommended to use a shorter incubation period to minimize the influence of aquaculture water on color development in Biolog EcoPlates.

Ciera Kinley-Baird et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of various USEPA-registered algaecides on microcystin-producing cyanobacteria from Lake Okeechobee through laboratory toxicity experiments. Results showed that certain formulations, particularly copper-based ones, had significant effects on the target cyanobacteria with reduced microcystin release and concentrations compared to untreated controls at different exposure times. These findings provide important data for decision-making and developing management strategies for water bodies impacted by harmful algal blooms.

Microbial Carbon Metabolic Functions in Sediments Influenced by Resuspension Event

Miao Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that wind-wave disturbance has little impact on the total carbon metabolism of sediment microbial communities, but significantly affects the microbial utilization ability of specific carbon sources. Certain carbon sources such as amines and carboxylic acids are greatly affected, while resuspension events do not alter the overall carbon metabolism function.
