Eco-toxicity of nano-plastics and its implication on human metabolism: Current and future perspective

Shoumi Haldar et al.

Summary: This review paper discusses the source, bio-accumulation, potential toxicity impact, and management strategies of nanoplastics pollution. It shows that nanoplastics interfere with metabolic pathways, causing organ dysfunction and altering organism physiology and behavior. The major exposure route for nanoplastics is ingestion, although inhalation is also possible. However, there is limited research on the risk assessment of nanoplastics toxicity for human health, highlighting the importance of studying their potential impacts and environmental accumulation.

Size-Dependent Uptake and Depuration of Nanoplastics in Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Distinct Intestinal Impacts

Tianwei Hao et al.

Summary: This study focused on the tissue-specific toxicokinetics of nanoparticles (NPs) in tilapia and their corresponding toxic effects on the intestine. The results showed that the uptake and depuration kinetics of NPs were dependent on the particle size, with smaller NPs causing more damage to the intestinal mucosal layer and larger NPs impacting microbiota composition. These findings provide new insights into the ecological effects of NPs on aquatic organisms.

Early developmental nanoplastics exposure disturbs circadian rhythms associated with stress resistance decline and modulated by DAF-16 and PRDX-2 in C. elegans

Chan-Wei Yu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that early developmental exposure to polystyrene NPs disrupts circadian rhythms in C. elegans, affecting chemotaxis response levels. Furthermore, NPs exposure leads to increased bioaccumulation in entrained worms and production of reactive oxygen species, which are related to disturbed circadian rhythms. The research also showed that the circadian disruption induced by NPs is associated with a decline in stress resistance and is modulated by transcription DAF-16/FOXO signaling.

Size-dependent effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on autophagy response in human umbilical vein endothelial cells

Yan-Yang Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that both sizes of PS-NPs interacted with treated HUVECs in a time- and concentration-dependent manner, with 500 nm PS-NPs only binding to cell membranes and 100 nm PS-NPs being taken up and aggregated in the cytoplasm. Exposure to 25 μg/mL of 500 nm PS-NPs for 48 hours led to increased lactate dehydrogenase release from HUVECs, while internalized 100 nm PS-NPs caused membrane damage and induced autophagy. The research also showed that autophagic flux level was impaired in response to 100 nm PS-NPs.

The interplay of autophagy and oxidative stress in the pathogenesis and therapy of retinal degenerative diseases

Kun-Che Chang et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress caused by intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production is closely associated with the pathogenesis of ocular diseases. Autophagy, a self-clearance pathway, plays an antioxidant role by regulating cellular ROS levels. However, excessive autophagy may lead to cell death. This review summarizes the mechanisms of interaction between ROS and autophagy and their roles in several ocular diseases.

Circadian regulation of protein cargo in extracellular vesicles

Ching-Yan Chloe Yeung et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the circadian regulation of protein cargo in small extracellular vesicles released by tendon fibroblasts. The abundance of individual proteins in these vesicles shows a 24-hour rhythmic pattern, and the release of vesicles enriched in different protein types is temporally separated. The protein sorting mechanism in the exosome biogenesis pathway, regulated by flotillin-1, plays a role in regulating the abundance of matrix metalloproteinase 14 in tendon fibroblast small extracellular vesicles.

Canidin-3-glucoside prevents nano-plastics induced toxicity via activating autophagy and promoting discharge

Wen Chen et al.

Summary: Microplastics pollution has attracted increasing attention recently, and evidence suggests that nano-plastics degraded from microplastics are more toxic and of greater research significance. Little research has focused on preventing toxicity induced by nano-plastics. Canidin-3-glucoside (C3G) has been shown to have antioxidant properties and protect intestinal tissue, potentially serving as a molecular weapon against nano-plastics induced toxicity.

Role of oxidative stress in nanoparticles toxicity

Masanori Horie et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress plays a critical role in nanotoxicity, but not all nanoparticles induce oxidative stress. Factors such as cellular uptake, intracellular metal ion release, and interactions with cells determine whether nanoparticles generate ROS, while particle size is not a direct influencing factor in nanoparticle-induced oxidative stress.

Stress Response of Mouse Embryonic Fibroblasts Exposed to Polystyrene Nanoplastics

Seung-Woo Han et al.

Summary: Polystyrene (PS) nanoplastic exposure can induce oxidative and inflammatory stress in cells, leading to activation of antioxidant and autophagic pathways as a response. However, PS nanoplastics may interfere with normal autophagic functions and impair autophagic flux in the cytoplasm. Interestingly, accumulated PS nanoplastics in cells can decrease during prolonged culture, suggesting cells are able to remove or export these nanoplastics over time.

Micro- and nanoplastic induced cellular toxicity in mammals: A review

Amrita Banerjee et al.

Summary: Plastic-based products are widely used in daily life but their limited biodegradability has raised pollution concerns globally, particularly micro- and nanoplastics. These pollutants are widespread in various environments and have well-documented biological effects on aquatic organisms, while their impacts on mammals remain insufficiently studied. Small size, positive charge, high dose, and presence of toxic additives or pollutants in micro/nanoplastics appear to induce cellular toxicity through oxidative stress, membrane damage, immune response, and genotoxicity.

Cellular internalization and release of polystyrene microplastics and nanoplastics

Ling Liu et al.

Summary: Microplastics and nanoplastics, specifically 50 nm and 500 nm polystyrene particles, can be internalized into living cells through passive membrane penetration and active endocytosis, accumulating mainly in lysosomes. Larger particles, like 5 mu m polystyrene particles, are unable to adhere to or be internalized by cells due to their size and weak Brownian motion.

A comparative review of microplastics and nanoplastics: Toxicity hazards on digestive, reproductive and nervous system

Kai Yin et al.

Summary: Plastic, with its excellent physical and chemical properties and low cost, has replaced some of the traditional materials like stone, wood, and metal, but improper handling and the inability to degrade have led to it becoming a serious environmental issue. Current research on microplastics focuses on transport, bioaccumulation, and toxicity, with a common approach treating microplastics and nanoplastics as a whole, overlooking their differences in toxicity.
