Monitoring spore washoff during a biological contamination incident response using automated stormwater samplers and sensors to predict contamination movement

Anne M. Mikelonis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the washoff of Bacillus globigii (Bg) spores from concrete, asphalt, and grass surfaces by stormwater. Spore concentrations in runoff water were measured after rainfall events, and data on soil moisture, water depth, and rainfall were collected. The results showed that spore concentrations were highest in runoff water from asphalt surfaces, followed by concrete and grass. The study also compared rainfall data from different rain gauges and found that they performed similarly in terms of total rainfall accumulation. The spore measurements are important for emergency responders and can be used for stormwater model parameterization.

Efficient Urban Runoff Quantity and Quality Modelling Using SWMM Model and Field Data in an Urban Watershed of Tehran Metropolis

Fariba Zakizadeh et al.

Summary: This study aims to simulate rainfall-runoff process in an urban watershed of Tehran, Iran by calibrating and validating the EPA Storm Water Management Model using field measurements of rainfall and runoff. The performance of the SWMM model was evaluated based on statistical criteria and graphical techniques. The study found that calibrating the model using field measurements resulted in satisfactory accuracy in simulating flow rates and pollutant concentrations.

Impact of spatial discretization resolution on the hydrological performance of layout optimization of LID practices

Zhaoli Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals the effects of spatial discretization of the model on the optimization results of low impact development practices. Higher resolution models provide more cost-effective layout schemes, while coarser models offer a wider range of solution sets.

Evaluating Monthly Flow Prediction Based on SWAT and Support Vector Regression Coupled with Discrete Wavelet Transform

Lifeng Yuan et al.

Summary: Reliable and accurate streamflow prediction is crucial for watershed water resources planning and management. This study developed a hybrid SWAT-WSVR model that integrates the SWAT model with a SVR calibration method and DWT to improve modeling of watersheds with limited data availability. The results showed that the proposed SWAT-WSVR model outperformed the other two models in terms of accuracy and discrepancy.

Emergency response to stormwater contamination: A framework for containment and treatment

Anne M. Mikelonis et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a Stormwater Emergency Response Framework to assist stormwater managers in fulfilling their emergency response responsibilities. Quick decision-making in the initial hours is crucial due to the time-consuming process of hydraulic and watershed modeling for contaminated sites. The paper also includes simple calculations to guide decision makers on resource allocation to minimize pollution risks to downstream communities.

Rainfall Washoff of Spores From Concrete and Asphalt Surfaces

Anne M. Mikelonis et al.

Summary: The study found that surface material type (such as concrete vs asphalt) and the kinetic energy of the storm event can impact the washoff of Bacillus anthracis spores in urban settings. There were no significant differences in washoff between two different spore types, but there were significant differences in washoff between asphalt and concrete surfaces. Additionally, different data-fitting approaches may be more appropriate for small washoff areas compared to large subcatchments.
