Overlooked Invaders? Ecological Impacts of Non-Game, Native Transplant Fishes in the United States

Patterns of genetic diversity: Stepping-stone dispersal of an invasive fish introduced by an inter-basin water transfer project

Summary: Understanding large-scale dispersal processes and genetic diversity patterns is important for managing invasive species. In this study, we investigated the worm goby Taenioides cirratus and found that invasive populations experienced genetic diversity loss and strong population genetic structure due to bottlenecks and founder effects. Landscape connectivity and limited dispersal ability influenced the genetic isolation-by-distance patterns. We identified a one-way stepping-stone dispersal model for T. cirratus in the inter-basin water transfer project. Our results suggest the installation of physical barriers to reduce further spread of this invasive species.
