Spatial heterogeneity of ecosystem services trade-offs among ecosystem service bundles in an alpine mountainous region: A case- study in the Qilian Mountains, Northwest China

Yanmin Teng et al.

Summary: This study assessed the trade-offs and influencing factors of ecosystem services (ES) in the Qilian Mountains, a mountainous region with diverse climate and topography. The results showed significant spatial heterogeneity in the eight key ES evaluated, which could be clustered into three bundles. Natural factors, such as vegetation coverage, elevation, precipitation, and slope, were found to be the main drivers of ES differentiation, while human factors had a relatively high influence on provisioning and cultural services in local areas.

Response of multiple mountain ecosystem services on environmental gradients: How to respond, and where should be priority conservation?

Yuyang Yu et al.

Summary: This study focused on the spatial changes of ecosystem services, trade-offs, and optimal protection areas selection in the Qinling-Daba Mountain, Qinling Mountain and Daba Mountain of China based on simulated ecosystem services from 2000 to 2015. Results showed that net primary production, soil conservation, and habitat quality increased with higher altitude and vegetation cover fraction, while water yield and grain production decreased. The combination of ecosystem services and priority conservation areas played a significant role in the management of the Qinling-Daba Mountain, providing meaningful reference for the selection of nature reserves.

Revealing ecosystem services relationships and their driving factors for five basins of Beijing

Gao Jiangbo et al.

Summary: This study simulated soil conservation, water yield and carbon sequestration in Beijing, China, and explored the spatial trade-offs and synergies using geographically weighted regression. The study also quantitatively identified the driving mechanism of environmental factors for the ES trade-offs and synergies through geographical detector analysis. The results showed spatial trade-offs between soil conservation and water yield, as well as between water yield and carbon sequestration, with a synergy between soil conservation and carbon sequestration.

Environmental determinants impacting the spatial heterogeneity of karst ecosystem services in Southwest China

Jiangbo Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the environmental determinants affecting karst ecosystem services in Southwest China using geographical detector and geographical weighted regression methodologies, revealing significant differences in determinants among diverse geomorphological types. Land use plays a dominant role in each geomorphological type, while precipitation and vegetation coverage have the largest impact area on water yield and soil loss in each geomorphological type, respectively. Terrain factors are more important for carbon sequestration at the basin scale, with land use being more influential in each geomorphological type.

Evaluating the suitability of urban development land with a Geodetector

Haiying Wang et al.

Summary: A new method combining various techniques was proposed to evaluate the suitability of urban development land, improving the accuracy and objectivity of the evaluation results. The method can avoid subjective influences and provide highly accurate evaluations, potentially serving as a scientific reference for land resource allocation in urban development.

Investigating the compounding effects of environmental factors on ecosystem services relationships for Ecological Conservation Red Line areas

Liyuan Zuo et al.

Summary: The study reveals that there are trade-offs and synergies between soil conservation, water yield, and carbon sequestration in the ECRL areas of Beijing, with terrain factors having a significant impact on their interactions. Precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and temperature are the main driving factors affecting the trade-offs between these three ecosystem services.
