Association of the lipoprotein lipase and Apolipoprotein C-II gene polymorphisms with risk of dyslipidemia in smokers and non-smokers male

Rithab Ibrahim Al-Samawi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between smoking duration and the genetic polymorphisms of lipoprotein lipase enzyme (LPL) and Apolipoprotein CII (APOCII) in relation to dyslipidaemia. The results showed that individuals with the H+H+ or H+H genotype of the LPL-Hind III polymorphism and the A1A1 or A1A2 genotype of the APOCII-Ava II polymorphism were at a higher risk of developing dyslipidaemia.

A Clinical Case of a Homozygous Deletion in the APOA5 Gene with Severe Hypertriglyceridemia

Petr Andreevich Vasiluev et al.

Summary: Hypertriglyceridemia is a common lipid metabolism disorder, and its severe form is associated with mutations in the LPL, APOC2, LMF1, and APOA5 genes. This case report presents a severe case of hypertriglyceridemia in a consanguineous family, caused by a homozygous deletion in the APOA5 gene. Additionally, a polymorphism in the LPL gene was found to worsen the disease course.

A Critical Review of the Biochemical Mechanisms and Epigenetic Modifications in HIV- and Antiretroviral-Induced Metabolic Syndrome

Jivanka Mohan et al.

Summary: Metabolic syndrome is a non-communicable disease characterized by a cluster of metabolic irregularities, with a high prevalence in people living with HIV and using ARVs. Mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance, inflammation, lipodystrophy, and dyslipidaemia are common mechanisms associated with MetS. Protease inhibitors are more commonly implicated in MetS-related effects than other classes of ARVs, emphasizing the need for more epigenetic studies.

Brown and beige adipose tissue: a novel therapeutic strategy for obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus

Long Cheng et al.

Summary: There are two major types of adipose tissue in mammals, white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT), with different functions. White adipocytes can transdifferentiate into beige adipocytes, which play a significant role in the treatment of obesity and diabetes. Activation of BAT and induction of browning of WAT may provide a new strategy for improving glycolipid metabolism and insulin resistance in obese and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.

Association of SNPs in Lipid Metabolism Gene Single Nucleotide Polymorphism with the Risk of Obesity in Children

Elizaveta D. Kulaeva et al.

Summary: The study investigated potential interactions of single nucleotide polymorphisms contributing to polygenic obesity in 367 children aged 4-18 years. While genotype and allele frequencies of the studied SNPs in overweight children were similar to the control group, the SerSer genotype of the LPL gene's Ser447Ter polymorphism was associated with significantly higher TG levels in obese children. A two-locus genotype FTO AT/LPL SerTer was found to be linked to a reduced risk of childhood obesity.

Contribution of Adipose Tissue to the Chronic Immune Activation and Inflammation Associated With HIV Infection and Its Treatment

Christine Bourgeois et al.

Summary: White adipose tissue plays a significant role in inflammation, especially in the context of obesity. In HIV-infected patients, both the infection and antiretroviral therapy target the adipose tissue, leading to changes in inflammation and metabolic functions. The balance between the effects of viral persistence, immune defects, and ART toxicity on inflammatory profiles in these patients is complex and challenging to distinguish.

Apolipoprotein M-A Marker or an Active Player in Type II Diabetes?

Christina Christoffersen

Summary: The apoM/S1P complex is important for inflammation and cholesterol metabolism, as well as for maintaining a healthy endothelial barrier and reducing cholesterol accumulation in vessel walls. Recent studies have also explored the role of apoM and S1P in the development of diabetes and obesity, but limited evidence and conflicting results are available.
