Filter-feeding fish (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) mediated phosphorus recycling versus grazing pressure as drivers of the trophic cascade in large enclosures subsidized by allochthonous detritus

Qiuqi Lin et al.

Summary: Stocking filter-feeding fish in (sub)tropical Chinese reservoirs to control phytoplankton has been found to enhance phytoplankton growth instead. Fish play a significant role in the dynamics and fluxes of phosphorus in the water column, with increasing fish biomass leading to decreased total phosphorus concentration. This study highlights the importance of fish presence in regulating phosphorus dynamics and controlling phytoplankton biomass in reservoir ecosystems.
