On shock-induced light-fluid-layer evolution

Yu Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of shock-induced light-fluid layers experimentally and theoretically. The results show that the multiple reflected shocks gradually converge the speeds of the two interfaces and the layer thickness eventually saturates. The end time of phase reversal determines the influence of reflected shocks on the first interface, while reverberated shocks make the second interface more unstable.

Reynolds number dependence of turbulence induced by the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability using direct numerical simulations

M. Groom et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Reynolds number dependence of a turbulent mixing layer evolved from the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability through direct numerical simulations. It is found that the growth and decay rates of the mixing layer are marginally dependent on the Reynolds number, with the dissipation rate decreasing as the Reynolds number increases and the distribution biased towards the spike side of the layer. Normalised dissipation rate and scalar dissipation rate approach a high Reynolds number limit, while the evaluation of the mixing transition criterion indicates that turbulence is not fully developed even at the highest Reynolds number case, despite the observation of a narrow inertial range in the turbulent kinetic energy spectra.

Statistical characteristics of turbulent mixing in spherical and cylindrical converging Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities

Xinliang Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, the Richtmyer-Meshkov instabilities in spherical and cylindrical converging geometries with a Mach number of approximately 1.5 are studied using high resolution implicit large eddy simulation method. The influence of the geometric effect on turbulent mixing is investigated and the results show that the geometric effect has a significant impact on the converging Richtmyer-Meshkov instability mixing layers.

Richtmyer-Meshkov instability on two-dimensional multi-mode interfaces

Yu Liang et al.

Summary: The study conducted shock-tube experiments on two-dimensional multi-mode air-SF interfaces with controllable initial conditions, revealing the significant impact of initial spectra on perturbation growth. It was found that the mode-competition effect is closely related to initial spectra, and a nonlinear model based on initial spectra was established to predict the amplitude growth of individual modes. The nonlinear model was validated by experiments and data, and successfully extended to predict the growths of total perturbation width and bubble/spike width.

Mechanism and modelling of the secondary baroclinic vorticity in the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability

Naifu Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of secondary baroclinic vorticity (SBV) on Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) accelerated by a weak incident shock is elucidated and a vortex-based model for spike and bubble growth rates is developed. Two major mechanisms of single-mode RMI, primary baroclinic vorticity (PBV) and pressure perturbation, are distinguished and it is found that pressure perturbation can be neglected in the current RMI, with growth primarily driven by PBV. Subsequently, SBV leads to nonlinear growth of the interface with the generation of spikes and bubbles.

Time-resolved particle image velocimetry measurements of the turbulent Richtmyer-Meshkov instability

Everest G. Sewell et al.

Summary: Experiments were conducted on Richtmyer-Meshkov instability with a three-dimensional, multi-mode initial perturbation, investigating the effect of perturbation amplitude on measured quantities and observing the development of the mixing region. However, the results did not fully meet the more stringent requirements proposed by previous researchers.

On shock-induced heavy-fluid-layer evolution

Yu Liang et al.

Summary: The investigation focused on the evolution of a shocked SF6 gas layer with a finite thickness in the presence of RMI and RTI as well as waves reverberated inside the layer. It was found that in thin fluid layers, the two interfaces eventually coalesce. Additionally, rarefaction waves and compression waves inside the fluid layer induce additional RTI and RTS effects on the interfaces, respectively, beyond the RMI induced by shock waves.
