The quantity and quality assessment of microplastics in the freshwater fishes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Nahid Azizi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the quantity and type of microplastics in freshwater fishes over the past decade, finding that polyethylene and polypropylene were the main compositions in the fishes' bodies, with fiber and fragments being the predominant shapes, and black and blue the most common colors. Effluents from sewage treatment plants and fishing tools were identified as the primary sources of microplastics in aquatic environments.
