Temperature-induced changes in Arabidopsis Rubisco activity and isoform expression

Amanda P. Cavanagh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of environmental changes on the expression of Rubisco SSu in plants and finds that changes in SSu isoforms are associated with changes in Rubisco activity. Plants grown at warm temperatures have higher CO2 affinity and can maintain higher photosynthetic rates at higher measurement temperatures.

Heat stress may cause a significant reduction of rice yield in China under future climate scenarios

Qing Sun et al.

Summary: Extreme heat events under climate change seriously threaten rice growth. Existing crop models tend to underestimate the impacts of heat stress on rice yields. This study successfully modeled rice growth under heat stress and improved the accuracy of yield estimates. The future projections indicate a decreasing trend in rice yield, especially in rice-planted regions of China.

Coordination of plant growth and abiotic stress responses by tryptophan synthase β subunit 1 through modulation of tryptophan and ABA homeostasis in Arabidopsis

Wen-Cheng Liu et al.

Summary: To adapt to changing environments, plants have evolved regulatory mechanisms that balance their growth and stress responses. This study reveals the involvement of tryptophan synthase beta subunit 1 (TSB1) in coordinating the growth hormone auxin and the stress hormone abscisic acid (ABA), thereby affecting plant growth and abiotic stress responses. TSB1 serves as a key coordinator by balancing Trp and ABA homeostasis.

ROS production and signalling in chloroplasts: cornerstones and evolving concepts

Christine H. Foyer et al.

Summary: ROS like singlet oxygen, superoxide, and hydrogen peroxide serve as markers of living cells and are produced abundantly during oxygenic photosynthesis. These ROS act as signals within chloroplasts, influencing cellular processes and redox signaling pathways. The challenge lies in understanding the organized delivery of regulated ROS from the photosynthetic electron transport chain to transmit redox signals from the environment to the nucleus, with stromal carbohydrate metabolism also playing a key role in chloroplast signaling pathways.

Current rice models underestimate yield losses from short-term heat stresses

Ting Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that 14 rice growth models generally underestimated the negative impact of heat on grain yield under heat stress, indicating the current models cannot accurately estimate yield under extreme heat conditions. Therefore, there is an urgent need for research and development of a rice model that can accurately reflect the impact of heat stress.

A comprehensive transcriptome analysis of contrasting rice cultivars highlights the role of auxin and ABA responsive genes in heat stress response

Eshan Sharma et al.

Summary: Sensing and responding to changes in ambient temperature is crucial for the survival of all living organisms. A study on the response of rice seedlings to elevated temperatures revealed uniquely regulated genes and pathways in the heat-tolerant rice cultivar, particularly associated with auxin and ABA as part of the heat stress response. Analysis of regulatory network between transcription factors and their target genes under various temperature conditions provided insights into temperature-responsive genes and potential candidates for thermotolerance in rice.

The N-terminal cysteine is a dual sensor of oxygen and oxidative stress

Ah Jung Heo et al.

Summary: Cellular homeostasis requires sensing and adaptation to intracellular oxygen and reactive oxygen species. The Arg/N-degron pathway targets proteins for degradation through oxidation, arginylation, and ubiquitylation. Proteins may be partially stabilized under acute hypoxia, but can be chemically oxidized by ROS to generate a lysosomal N-degron under prolonged hypoxia.

Summary: Heat stress affects crop productivity through impaired carbon metabolism and reproductive development. Understanding the integration of these processes and their contribution to yield maintenance is crucial for developing climate-resilient crops. Recent studies on source-sink dynamics, non-foliar photosynthesis, and net carbon gain provide key insights into improving reproductive development and crop productivity under heat stress.

What happens at night? Physiological mechanisms related to maintaining grain yield under high night temperature in rice

Jiemeng Xu et al.

Summary: High night temperature (HNT) has negative effects on rice yield, mainly by reducing spikelet number per panicle leading to yield decrease. HNT enhances nighttime reduction of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) in stem tissue, negatively correlated with yield. HNT weakens the relationship between NSC remobilization and harvest index.

The role of photoprotection in defence of two wheat genotypes against Zymoseptoria tritici

Olubukola O. Ajigboye et al.

Summary: This study provides new insights into the role of photoprotection in preformed and induced defence of two wheat genotypes with contrasting phenotypes to infection by Zymoseptoria tritici. The photoprotective mechanism of successful defence involved the qI component of NPQ leading to rapid down-regulation of photosystem II quantum yield and chlorophyll a:b, increased biosynthesis of the xanthophyll neoxanthin and ABA, and the expression of chloroplast-specific enzymes to engage in scavenging of O-2(?-). Elevated ABA in the resistant genotype correlated with preformed leaf defence traits including low stomatal density, increased expression of wax biosynthesis, and lignification.

FERONIA Confers Resistance to Photooxidative Stress in Arabidopsis

Seung Yong Shin et al.

Summary: Plants rely on the FER-mediated photoprotection mechanism to defend against photooxidative stress even under moderate light intensity, preventing photobleaching and reduced stress gene expression. FER deficiency significantly increases pressure on Photosystem II and leads to accumulation of reactive oxygen species. The abundance of FER protein is influenced by light intensity.
