Zinc deficiency responses: bridging the gap between Arabidopsis and dicotyledonous crops

Noemie Thiebaut et al.

Summary: Zinc deficiency in agricultural soils is widespread and has significant impacts on crop yield, quality, human nutrition, and health. This article focuses on the investigation of zinc deficiency response mechanisms in dicotyledonous crops, such as Phaseolus vulgaris, Glycine max, Brassica oleracea, and Solanum lycopersicum, and highlights the importance of translating knowledge from Arabidopsis to improve zinc biofortification strategies in dicotyledonous crops. The article also discusses the function and regulation of zinc transporters and chelators, zinc-sensing mechanisms, and the role of hormones in the zinc deficiency response.

One hundred years into the study of ecotypes, new advances are being made through large-scale field experiments in perennial plant systems

Acer VanWallendael et al.

Summary: Plant biologists are making significant progress in understanding the mechanisms underlying adaptation from local populations to continents. They are studying the genetics of local adaptation using whole genomes in large-scale common garden experiments. These studies suggest that a complex combination of loci with and without adaptive trade-offs contributes to local adaptation, and that hybridization and adaptive introgression play a key role in the evolution of these species. Future research will incorporate high-throughput phenotyping, gene expression, and modeling to predict species' responses to climate change.

Intracellular polyphosphate is a P reserve in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

M. Plouviez et al.

Summary: The study investigated the changes in cellular phosphorus content and granular polyP abundance in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under different phosphorus supply conditions. The results suggest that polyP functions as a reserve of phosphorus in the absence of readily available extracellular phosphorus and is not utilized as an energy source in darkness.

New insights in copper handling strategies in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under low-iron condition

Emeric Kochoni et al.

Summary: This study focuses on understanding the intracellular fate of copper (Cu) in the freshwater green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, specifically in low-iron conditions. The research reveals that Cu accumulation in the algae is significantly higher in low-iron medium compared to regular growth conditions. Cu is mainly found in the organelles and heat-stable proteins and peptides fraction of the cytosol. The study also identifies various Cu-binding ligands in the algae, including glutathione, phytochelatins, and other proteins that may play a role in Cu detoxification. These findings provide new insights into the coping mechanisms of C. reinhardtii when exposed to high rates of Cu accumulation induced by environmental conditions.

Adaptation of Arabidopsis halleri to extreme metal pollution through limited metal accumulation involves changes in cell wall composition and metal homeostasis

Massimiliano Corso et al.

Summary: Metallophytes, such as A. halleri, exhibit significant variation in metal tolerance and accumulation due to differential expression of transporter genes and cell wall components in response to metal-contaminated environments. The metallicolous population showed increased tolerance to and reduced hyperaccumulation of Zn, limited accumulation of Cd, and altered metal homeostasis compared to the nonmetallicolous population, suggesting the involvement of specific cell wall components and transporter genes in limiting metal accumulation.

Limitation of phosphate assimilation maintains cytoplasmic magnesium homeostasis

Roberto E. Bruna et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is essential for biological molecules in bacteria, but excessive intake can lead to cytoplasmic Mg2+ deficiency, affecting bacterial growth and viability. Bacteria limit Pi uptake to prevent this, showing a regulatory logic based on the connection to cytoplasmic Mg2+ homeostasis.

Single-cell visualization and quantification of trace metals in Chlamydomonas lysosome-related organelles

Stefan Schmollinger et al.

Summary: The acidocalcisome is an acidic organelle in the cytosol of eukaryotes, characterized by its low pH and high calcium and polyphosphate content. XFM allows for accurate measurement of trace metal content within acidocalcisomes, with studies showing that up to 70% of cellular copper and 80% of iron can be sequestered in these organelles during trace metal overaccumulation. Additionally, XFM can distinguish between different populations of acidocalcisomes based on their unique elemental makeup.

The evolution of convex trade-offs enables the transition towards multicellularity

Joana P. Bernardes et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that exposing unicellular green algae to a rotifer predator for just 500 generations was enough to lead to a convex trade-off between body cells and germ cells, incorporating the evolved changes into the prey genome. The evolution of cell groups was confirmed to be heritable, characterized by a convex trade-off curve between reproduction and survival, with identical mutations evolving in all cell group isolates. This research sheds light on the poorly understood major evolutionary transition towards multicellularity at the ecological and genetic level.

Long-term acclimation to cadmium exposure reveals extensive phenotypic plasticity in Chlamydomonas

Stanislas Thiriet-Rupert et al.

Summary: The study found that the green algae's response to cadmium toxicity is influenced by both short-term and long-term exposure, but biomass production can recover to levels similar to control conditions after long-term acclimation. This recovery involves changes in cell wall-related gene expression, dynamics of metal ion uptake and homeostasis, photosynthesis efficiency, and adjustment through metal homeostasis. It also identified the coordination of phosphorus and iron homeostasis mediated by specific regulators as key factors in the algae's physiological plasticity.
