Resistance of Blastocystis to chlorine and hydrogen peroxide

Summary: Blastocystis is a genetically diverse protist found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals, with at least 28 subtypes identified. The pathogenicity of Blastocystis is controversial, and transmission can occur through fecal-oral and waterborne routes. This study found increased resistance of all Blastocystis subtypes to chlorine and hydrogen peroxide, suggesting the presence of resistance mechanisms. These findings have implications for developing guidelines for water treatment processes.

Identification and Molecular Characterization of Four New Blastocystis Subtypes Designated ST35-ST38

Summary: Three recent studies found four novel sequences in mammalian hosts infected with Blastocystis, with B. lapemi as the most similar sequence. However, full-length ssu rRNA gene sequences were not available to confirm the validity of these new subtypes. This study used Nanopore MinION sequencing to obtain full-length reference sequences for each of the new subtypes, and confirmed their validity through phylogenetic analysis and pairwise distance comparisons. The proposed subtype designations for the novel sequences in this study are ST35-ST38, which will aid in future accurate sequence descriptions and studies of Blastocystis epidemiology and subtype diversity.

Association of Blastocystis hominis with colorectal cancer: A systematic review of in vitro and in vivo evidences

Summary: This systematic review examines the association between colorectal cancer (CRC) and Blastocystis, as well as the prevalence of Blastocystis in CRC patients. The results confirm the presence of Blastocystis in 2%-28% of CRC patients and demonstrate the cytopathic and immunological effects of Blastocystis in in vitro and in vivo studies. The findings suggest that Blastocystis could exacerbate existing CRC through alterations in the host immune response and increased oxidative damage.

First identification and molecular subtyping of Blastocystis sp. in zoo animals in southwestern China

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis sp. in captive wildlife in zoos in Sichuan Province, southwestern China, revealing a high prevalence of infection among the animals, with Panzhihua Zoo having the highest prevalence. Molecular Characterization of Blastocystis in Captive and Free-Ranging New World Primates, Platyrrhini

Summary: This study aimed to molecularly characterize the presence of Blastocystis in free-ranging black-headed night monkeys in Southeastern Peru. Results showed 13% of samples were Blastocystis positive, sharing high sequence similarity with isolates from other neotropical primates.
