Molecular Mechanism of Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Perilla Seed Oil and Rosmarinic Acid Rich Fraction Extracted from Perilla Seed Meal on TNF-α Induced A549 Lung Adenocarcinoma Cells

Payungsak Tantipaiboonwong et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that perilla seed oil (PSO) and rosmarinic acid-rich fraction (RA-RF) act as antioxidants to scavenge TNF-alpha induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, resulting in decreased expression of inflammatory cytokines and modulation of multiple signaling pathways, showing a potential role in preventing oxidative stress and inflammation.

Pro-Angiogenic Effects of Essential Oil from Perilla frutescens and Its Main Component (Perillaldehyde) on Zebrafish Embryos and Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells

Fei Zhou et al.

Summary: Perilla frutescens essential oil and its main component perillaldehyde demonstrate significant pro-angiogenic effects by promoting formation of intersegmental vessels in zebrafish embryos and proliferation, migration, and tube formation in sunitinib-injured HUVECs. These effects are mediated by increased expression ratios of p-ERK1/2 to ERK1/2 and Bcl2 to Bax. These findings suggest that EOPF and perillaldehyde may be potential therapies for cardiocerebrovascular diseases.

Inhibitory Effect of a Rosmarinic Acid-Enriched Fraction Prepared from Nga-Mon (Perilla frutescens) Seed Meal on Osteoclastogenesis through the RANK Signaling Pathway

Kanokkarn Phromnoi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of various perilla seed meal fractions and their impact on osteoporosis. The ethyl acetate fraction of seed meal showed the highest antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, with a high content of rosmarinic acid. It was found that this fraction effectively suppressed RANKL-induced osteoclast formation by downregulating NF-kappa B, AP-1 activation, and NFATc1 expression, and inhibited ROS production as well. These results suggest that the ethyl acetate fraction rich in rosmarinic acid has potential for osteoclastogenic protection and health promotion.

Effects of ethanol, activated carbon, and activated kaolin on perilla seed oil: Volatile organic compounds, physicochemical characteristics, and fatty acid composition

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: This article evaluates the differences in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), physicochemical characteristics, and fatty acid composition of perilla seed oil (PSO) treated with ethanol, activated carbon, and activated kaolin. The treatment methods had a significant impact on the peroxide value of PSO but minimal effect on other indicators. Aldehydes, alkenals, alcohols, ketones, and esters were the main groups identified in the VOCs.
