Lowering the Intraocular Pressure in Rats and Rabbits by Cordyceps cicadae Extract and Its Active Compounds

Li-Ya Lee et al.

Summary: The ethanolic extract of Cordyceps cicadae mycelium (CCME) was found to lower intraocular pressure caused by glaucoma and reduce apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells. The active ingredient HEA also had the same effect in a rabbit model.

Recent Research on Flavonoids and their Biomedical Applications

Kangmei Wen et al.

Summary: Flavonoids, a class of polyphenolic compounds with a basic structural unit of 2-phenylchromone, have wide potential applications in biomedicine. A review of literature on the medical use of flavonoids in the past decade has documented their pharmacological activities and mechanisms of action against various health disorders. The findings provide suggestions for further research on the biomedical applications of flavonoids.

Phaco-UCP; combined phacoemulsification and ultrasound ciliary plasty versus phacoemulsification alone for management of coexisting cataract and open angle glaucoma: a randomized clinical trial

Magda A. Torky et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a new technique, Phaco-UCP, for coexisting cataract and open angle glaucoma. Results showed that Phaco-UCP group had a significant reduction in IOP and decreased number of anti-glaucoma medications, with a higher success rate compared to the Phaco-alone group. No serious complications were encountered in either group, indicating that Phaco-UCP is a simple, safe, and effective procedure for managing coexisting cataract and open angle glaucoma.

Transneuronal Degeneration in the Brain During Glaucoma

Mengling You et al.

Summary: The death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of glaucoma, suggesting it may be a neurodegenerative disease involving CNS damage. More research is needed to understand the mechanisms of neuronal damage in glaucoma and identify potential targets for neuroprotection and treatment.

Novel Thiol Containing Hybrid Antioxidant-Nitric Oxide Donor Small Molecules for Treatment of Glaucoma

Charles E. Amankwa et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress-induced death and dysregulation of trabecular meshwork (TM) cells contribute to increased intraocular pressure (IOP) in primary open angle (POAG) glaucoma, while nitric oxide (NO) can lower IOP by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS). The novel sulfur containing hybrid NO donor-antioxidants were designed to scavenge ROS and maintain NO bioavailability in TM cells, demonstrating potential for glaucoma treatment. The slow-release nanosuspension of these molecules significantly lowered IOP in a mouse model, showing lasting effects up to 72 hours.

Natsuko Nakamura et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that OMD modulates the expression of ECM proteins and cytoskeleton remodeling in HTM and SCE cells through suppressing the effects of TGF-β2, leading to improved outflow facilities and decreased permeability. Additionally, OMD inhibits CM contraction, contributing to the reduction of intraocular pressure through the conventional outflow pathway.

miRNAs and Genes Involved in the Interplay between Ocular Hypertension and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma. Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Apoptosis Networks

Jorge Raga-Cervera et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated for the first time the differential expression profiling of eight miRNAs in tears from OHT versus POAG groups, suggesting miRNAs and their target genes/signaling pathways as candidates for better understanding the molecular-genetic bases of glaucoma. Further research is needed to validate these miRNAs as potential biomarkers for the diagnosis, prognosis, and prevention of glaucoma.
