Dachaihu decoction ameliorates septic intestinal injury via modulating the gut microbiota and glutathione metabolism as revealed by multi-omics

Na Huang et al.

Summary: Dachaihu decoction (DCH), a classic Chinese formula, has been widely used in treating intestinal disorders and inflammatory diseases with few side effects. This study aimed to explore the mechanism of DCH on septic intestinal injury (SII). The results showed that medium dose of DCH improved survival, reduced pathological changes, and enhanced the expression of tight junction protein ZO-1, mucin2 (MUC2), and secretory IgA (sIgA) in SII rats.

Butyrate and propionate restore interleukin 13-compromised esophageal epithelial barrier function

Mirelle T. A. Kleuskens et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of SCFAs acetate, propionate, and butyrate on the esophageal barrier function in EoE, finding that butyrate and propionate can restore the barrier function of esophageal epithelial cells after inflammatory insult. This suggests that these nutraceuticals may have therapeutic benefits in managing EoE.

Butyrate in Energy Metabolism: There Is Still More to Learn

Lin Zhang et al.

Summary: Butyrate, as a main product of gut microbial fermentation, plays an important role in regulating whole body energy homeostasis. Research has shown that butyrate has multiple effects on metabolic health, including thermogenesis, lipid and glucose metabolism, appetite, inflammation, and influence on gut microbiota. Through pathways such as G protein-coupled receptors (GPRs) and acting as a histone deacetylase inhibitor, butyrate also impacts cellular systems.

Aberrant gene expression induced by a high fat diet is linked to H3K9 acetylation in the promoter-proximal region

Nuria Morral et al.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common chronic liver disease with aberrant transcriptional control of gene expression as a contributing factor. H3K9ac histone modification plays a crucial role in transcription control and may be implicated in dysregulated gene expression in response to a high-fat diet. This study suggests a novel mechanism of gene regulation that could be important in the development of metabolic diseases.

Weifen Li et al.

Summary: The study examined the involvement of HDAC1 and eEF2 in the antidepressant mechanisms of fluoxetine, showing that fluoxetine can alleviate LPS-induced depressive-like behaviors and neuroinflammation, while the HDAC1 activator Exifone reversed the antidepressant and anti-inflammatory effects of fluoxetine.

Summary: The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in extracting energy from food, providing vitamins to the host, and acting as a barrier against exogenous pathogens. The Western diet, characterized by overeating, frequent snacking, and prolonged postprandial state, has been associated with dysbiosis and inflammation linked to excessive fat consumption.

Summary: This study used network pharmacology and bioinformatics to identify the active components and potential targets of Erchen decoction (ECD) for treating nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Through experiments on NAFLD mice models, it was found that ECD improved various profiles of NAFLD, reduced inflammatory molecules levels, and modulated gut microbiota composition.
