Systematic review of ecosystem services flow measurement: Main concepts, methods, applications and future directions

Lijuan Wang et al.

Summary: Studying the entire process of ecosystem services flow is crucial for managing ecosystem services. However, different concepts and measurement methods have hindered the effective application of ecosystem services flow in policy and management. This article provides a systematic review of the concepts, methods, and applications of ecosystem services flow and proposes future research directions to improve its understanding and implementation.

Framework for a more balanced consideration of hydropower development through ecosystem services assessment

Zhou Fang et al.

Summary: The study proposed a framework for assessing the impact of hydropower development on ecosystem services, and conducted a case study in China's Yalong river basin, showing negative impacts on carbon storage and water purification. Ecological restoration measures should be taken to mitigate the impacts.

Framework of basin eco-compensation standard valuation for cross-regional water supply - A case study in northern China

Zhou Fang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a BEC valuation method developed by combining gross ecosystem product (GEP) accounting with total cost accounting, which was applied to a cross-regional water transfer project. The results revealed that water-related ecosystem services (WESs) received a minor proportion of the compensation, and suggested implementing multi-agent joint bargaining, a BEC fund, and hydrological monitoring to improve BEC valuations.

Ecological economics: The next 30 years

Joshua Farley et al.

Summary: This special section of the journal on ecological economics explores the next 30 years through a variety of articles from different contributors, focusing on themes such as uncertainty, sustainable scale, just distribution, collective action, co-evolution, and the need for systemic change. Using multi-level selection theory, the editorial provides insights into promoting collective action for achieving socially just sustainability transition and reevaluating the distinction between normative and positive science. Ecological economists are united in their recognition of the importance of building economics on biophysical foundations and prioritizing common good over self-interested individual preferences.

Sustainability of protected areas: Vulnerabilities and opportunities as revealed by COVID-19 in a national park management agency

M. Kyle S. Smith et al.

Summary: Lockdown regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted South Africa's largest PA management agency, leading to decreased tourism revenue, loss of community development revenues, and implementation of cost-cutting measures. Employee morale was affected, complicating operational challenges.

Gross economic-ecological product as an integrated measure for ecological service and economic products

Jinnan Wang et al.

Summary: The article introduces the use of GEEP in China to monitor economic growth, showing that GEEP grew at a slightly lower rate than GDP, indicating an imbalance between the economy and ecosystems. As a policy tool, GEEP can help monitor economic growth and protect natural capital.

Ecological redlines provide a mechanism to maximize conservation gains in Mainland Southeast Asia

Yang Bai et al.

Summary: Developing effective conservation targets is a global debate, with some proposing ambitious targets for a significant portion of the Earth's land surface. A framework based on China's ecological conservation redline has been put forward to determine ecological priorities in Mainland Southeast Asia, incorporating ecosystem services, ecological sensitivity, and biodiversity indicators. The study found that a certain percentage of the land in the region covers overlaps between biodiversity, service provision, and sensitivity hotspots, in alignment with post-2020 global biodiversity framework targets.

Funding deficits of protected areas in Brazil

Jose Maria Cardoso da Silva et al.

Summary: The study describes the variation in funding deficits across Brazilian federal PAs and proposes a model to explain this variation. It was found that there is a high proportion of funding deficits in Brazilian PAs, similar to those found in sub-Saharan Africa. New policies and innovative funding mechanisms are needed to bridge the large funding gap in the Brazilian federal PA system.
