Challenges with product environmental footprint: a systematic review

Emil Pedersen et al.

Summary: The PEF method has encountered some methodological issues and ongoing discussions, with updates addressing some but not all of the significant challenges in fair product comparison, impact categories, and communication of study results. Addressing these issues is crucial for the PEF method to play a key role in promoting green products in the market.

Revisiting the promise of carbon labelling

Khan M. R. Taufique et al.

Summary: Carbon labelling may influence both organizational and retail consumer behavior, potentially reducing the carbon footprints of goods and services. Research mainly focuses on how labelling affects consumer behavior, with less attention given to its impact on organizational behavior. Key challenges faced by carbon labelling systems include standard setting, data collection and use, and label design.

Enviroscore: normalization, weighting, and categorization algorithm to evaluate the relative environmental impact of food and drink products

Saioa Ramos et al.

Summary: This study proposes a 5-scale label to quantify the environmental impact of a product relative to the European food basket. It developed a methodology to aggregate environmental impact categories into a single index and established thresholds for translating the index into the Enviroscore. The results showed that both Enviroscore and the index were effective in accounting for impact variability between and within food products.

A Multi-Stakeholder Perspective on Food Labelling for Environmental Sustainability: Attitudes, Perceived Barriers, and Solution Approaches towards the Traffic Light Index

Nathalie Groefke et al.

Summary: This study explores how different stakeholder groups inhibit the adoption of the Traffic Light Index (TLI) label by adopting either optimistic or skeptical attitudes, perceiving various barriers to its adoption, and proposing solutions of entrepreneurial or risk-averse nature. Stakeholder interactions influence attitudes and may alter perceptions and barriers towards TLI adoption. Multiple stakeholders' perceptions hinder the adoption of TLI and a theoretical framework and propositions are proposed for policy ideas to advance progress in food labelling for environmental sustainability.

How to induce sales of sustainable and organic food: The case of a traffic light eco-label in online grocery shopping

Lambert Neumayr et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the introduction of an eco-label to enhance shoppers' awareness of food environmental friendliness, promoting sales of sustainable and organic food. The experimental results showed that the eco-label had a significant, partly subconscious effect on shoppers' choices, particularly for low-involvement shoppers.
