Potentially toxic trace element pollution in long-term fertilized agricultural soils in China: A meta-analysis

Shiwei Zhou et al.

Summary: Long-term organic fertilization significantly increased total Cu, Zn, and Cd concentrations in Chinese croplands. Organic fertilizer type and application rate were key factors in determining PTTE concentrations, with organic fertilizers containing less than 1 mg/kg Cd recommended for safe application. Soil type under long-term inorganic fertilization played a main role in determining available PTTE variation, leading to higher pollution risk in certain soils.

Fraction distribution of heavy metals and its relationship with iron in polluted farmland soils around distinct mining areas

Wantong Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical fractions of heavy metals (HMs) and Fe in polluted farmland soils collected from mining areas in southern to central China. It found that Cu, Pb, and Cd mainly exist in the reducible fraction, while Zn accumulates in the oxidizable fraction. Total Cu, Pb, and Zn have positive correlations with their available contents, and Pb, Zn, and Cd are also positively correlated with each other. The association between As and Cd with various Fe fractions was identified, suggesting a synergistic accumulation effect in these soils. These findings are essential for ecological risk assessment and remediation of HMs in polluted farmland soils.

Pollution status, potential sources and health risk assessment of arsenic and trace metals in agricultural soils: A case study in Malatya province, Turkey

Memet Varol et al.

Summary: The study in Malatya province, Turkey, evaluated the concentrations of arsenic and 11 trace metals in vegetable field soils, assessing health risks for residents. Results indicated contamination with Cd, As, Ni, and Cu, likely from industrial wastewaters and agricultural practices. While some metals exceeded global averages, non-carcinogenic health risks were found to be low for both children and adults.

Geochemical stability of potentially toxic elements in porphyry copper-mine tailings from Chile as linked to ecological and human health risks assessment

David A. Rubinos et al.

Summary: The study on diverse fresh and old porphyry Cu-mine tailings from Chile reveals that Cu, As, Pb, and Mo are the most concerning potentially toxic elements. The majority of PTEs are strongly fixed as residual fraction, showing poor mobilization and bioavailability. Seawater and process water can influence mineral leaching in the tailings.

Pollution characteristics and source identification of soil metal(loid)s at an abandoned arsenic-containing mine, China

Hongzhen Ran et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sources and spatial distribution of metal(loid)s in soil at an abandoned arsenic mine site, revealing that arsenic, mercury, and antimony were the main pollutants from mining activities. Different metals had different sources, with mining activities being a significant source for arsenic, mercury, and antimony.
