Mechanical property and heavy metal leaching behavior enhancement of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash during the pressure-assisted sintering treatment

Xuexue Wang et al.

Summary: Pressure-assisted sintering was introduced to dispose fly ash at relatively low temperatures. It was found that increasing the CaO/SiO2 molar ratio led to higher compressive strength and lower heavy metal leaching risk. Microstructure analyses showed that increased mechanical pressure enhanced the densification process and the formation of new minerals positively affected the compressive strength.

Recent progress on the thermal treatment and resource utilization technologies of municipal waste incineration fly ash: A review

Binbin Huang et al.

Summary: Incineration is a promising approach for municipal solid waste disposal, but the resulting fly ash poses urgent problems. This paper analyzes the current situation and technologies for the hazard-free treatment and resourceful utilization of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA). Various thermal detoxification technologies and resource utilization methods are reviewed. The focus is on decomposing organic pollutants and stabilizing heavy metals through high-temperature processes. The paper emphasizes the importance of utilizing the physico-chemical characteristics of MSWI-FA for value-added utilization and promoting the safe and effective treatment of MSWI-FA for green and sustainable city development.

Preparation of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash-based ceramsite and its mechanisms of heavy metal immobilization

Yingying Shao et al.

Summary: In this study, ceramsite was prepared using MSWI fly ash, civil sludge, and contaminated soil as raw materials. The optimal preparation conditions were determined and the immobilization mechanisms of heavy metals were explored. The obtained ceramsite showed excellent performance parameters and the leaching of heavy metals was much lower than the standard. Therefore, the reuse of MSWI fly ash is an effective method for reducing solid wastes.

Hydrothermal oxidation degradation of dioxins in fly ash with water-washing and added Ce-Mn catalyst

Tong Zhang et al.

Summary: A comprehensive analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of temperature, reaction time, liquid-solid ratio, and initial pH on the hydrothermal degradation of PCDD/Fs in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash. The results showed that temperature was the most critical factor influencing the reaction. The addition of Ce-Mn catalyst under low temperature conditions improved the degradation efficiency. However, the catalyst had different effects on the degradation efficiency of PCDD/Fs with different levels of chlorination.

Effect of calcium oxide on chromium solidification during the melting of hazardous waste incineration fly ash

Dongsheng Shen et al.

Summary: The dosage of CaO significantly affects the curing effect of Cr during fly ash thermal treatment, with increasing CaO dosage leading to a decrease in the leaching concentration of Cr. The transition between different compounds is the fundamental reason for the change in Cr's leaching behavior and residual state.

Thermal cotreatment of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash with sewage sludge: Phases transformation, kinetics and fusion characteristics, and heavy metals solidification

Xiaoqing Lin et al.

Summary: Thermal treatment is an effective method to detoxify municipal solid waste incineration fly ash and produce secondary materials for recycling. Co-treating fly ash with sewage sludge can reduce energy consumption and control heavy metals leaching, significantly lowering ash fusion temperatures and increasing removal efficiency of chlorine. This method also effectively solidifies heavy metals into minerals or aluminosilicates, meeting standards for construction material use in China.

Integrated thermal behavior and compounds transition mechanism of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash during thermal treatment process

Xuexue Wang et al.

Summary: The thermal behavior of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash is complex due to simultaneous reactive processes and different chemical compositions of products. The study focused on investigating the transition behavior and mechanism of chemical compounds during the integrated thermal process. Malek method was introduced to explore the multi-step reaction mechanism for fly ash, revealing mineral transitions and reduced heavy metal leaching concentrations with increasing temperature. The kinetic study showed that the mineral transition process aligned well with the simulated reaction mechanism during thermal treatment.
