Influence of Fe2O3 and bacterial biofilms on Cu(II) distribution in a simulated aqueous solution: A feasibility study to sediments in the Pearl River Estuary (PR China)

Tonni Agustiono Kurniawan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interactions among Cu(II), biogenic materials, and Fe2O3 in a controlled environment. The effects of Fe2O3 and bacterial biofilms on Cu(II) distribution in a simulated aquatic environment were studied. A biofilm reactor was used to understand the metal speciation of Cu(II) and its distribution. Pseudomonas atlantica was cultured to adsorb Cu(II) and it was found that biofilms significantly enhanced Cu(II) adsorption. Cu(II) inhibited bacterial growth, but the presence of glycine and EDTA reduced its toxicity.
