Bioinspired facilitation of intrinsically conductive polymers: Mediating intra/extracellular electron transfer and microbial metabolism in denitrification

Tingting Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of intrinsically conductive polymers, polyaniline and polyaniline sulfonate (PASAni), on denitrification. It was found that PASAni accelerated denitrification by promoting electron transfer and enhancing microbial metabolism activity. PASAni accelerated both intracellular and extracellular electron transfer and provided additional electron transfer pathways. Furthermore, PASAni enhanced microbial metabolism activity and the enrichment of Proteobacteria was beneficial to denitrification.

The promotion and inhibition effect of graphene oxide on the process of microbial denitrification at low temperature

Yinhao Liao et al.

Summary: Graphene oxide (GO) was found to enhance microbial denitrification at low temperatures, with the optimal concentration being 10 mg/L. However, high concentrations of GO may inhibit denitrification by competing for electrons. GO can improve electron transport system activity, increase nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase activity, and enhance microbial aggregation.

Increased demand for NAD+ relative to ATP drives aerobic glycolysis

Alba Luengo et al.

Summary: Increasing the activity of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex impairs cell proliferation by reducing the NAD(+)/NADH ratio, which is caused by increased mitochondrial membrane potential. When demand for NAD(+) exceeds the demand for ATP in cells, aerobic glycolysis is promoted despite available oxygen.

Remediation of nitrate contamination by membrane hydrogenotrophic denitrifying biofilm integrated in microbial electrolysis cell

Dandan Liang et al.

Summary: Biological denitrification in water lacking electron donors is usually limited, but can be effectively improved by using gas diffusion membrane integrated microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) to generate hydrogen from organic wastes for cost-efficient denitrification. Different materials of MECs achieved high overall nitrogen removal rates of 90%-95% at all applied voltages, with decreasing voltage significantly improving electron utilization efficiency. Integration of MEC with gas diffusion membrane greatly improved total nitrogen removal by 40%, with dominant hydrogenotrophic denitrifiers facilitating nitrogen removal and higher abundance of functional denitrification related genes predicted by PICRUSt2 based on 16S rRNA gene data.

Modeling of interspecies electron transfer in anaerobic microbial communities

Elie Desmond-Le Quemener et al.

Summary: The study of mathematical modeling of DIET and MIET in anaerobic ecosystems offers new strategies for improving biotechnologies. While the modeling of DIET kinetics is still in its early stages, recent concepts introduced for modeling electroactive biofilms should be further developed. DIET shows potential to increase IET rates compared to H 2 -MIET, but additional characterizations of biological components supporting IET are needed to enhance predictions.

Active DNRA and denitrification in oxic hypereutrophic waters

Elias Broman et al.

Summary: Since the introduction of synthetic fertilizers over a hundred years ago, coastal oceans have faced increasing nutrient loading, resulting in eutrophication and extensive algal blooms. Studies show that in a large hypereutrophic lagoon, both dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and denitrification processes are active, with DNRA playing a crucial role in recycling fixed nitrogen in the ecosystem.

Long-distance electron transfer in a filamentous Gram-positive bacterium

Yonggang Yang et al.

Summary: Long-distance extracellular electron transfer has been observed in Gram-negative bacteria and now also in a filamentous, unicellular Gram-positive bacterium. The filamentous bacterium Lysinibacillus varians GY32 is capable of bidirectional extracellular electron transfer, forming centimetre-range conductive cellular networks with 1mm-long cells and conductive appendages. Our results demonstrate that Gram-positive bacteria can also participate in long-distance electron transfer processes.

Summary: Nanomaterials in contact with microbial membranes can accelerate denitrification processes by establishing a connection with the internal electron transfer chain of microorganisms. This study found that Pd-Fe/MWCNTs promote extracellular electron transfer in Alcaligenes sp.TB. The excellent electron exchange capacity of Pd-Fe/MWCNTs and the secretion of PN contribute to the occurrence of DEET process and electron transfer.
